New TEL workshops: future-proof your teaching

Embracing technology for learning and teaching

The TEL team has a new programme of workshops which will give you the opportunity to test and assess new technologies before using them in the classroom, or in your work or study routine.

If you are interested in using technology in your teaching but apprehensive about taking the plunge, or perhaps have seen faculty members using technologies but not yet had the chance to test them out for yourself, join the TEL team for a stimulating workshop.

Bookmarks, Prezis, Padlet? If these terms are not familiar to you and you would like to learn more, please see our staff training programme.

We can help demystify new learning technologies for you and give you ideas on how to use these new and emerging tools in your teaching.

Delivered by US, designed by you

Each of the workshops has been designed in response to feedback received from staff. All sessions are designed to contain a hands-on element to allow you to try technologies for yourself, rather than watch them being used. The TEL training sessions  are a risk free environment, you can’t break anything by pressing a wrong button!

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of some of these tools before, the workshops are introductions and so are suitable for both those who are new to technologies and those who are more confident.

We have five new workshops to run alongside our popular standard workshops. Here is a list of the new training opportunities available to you;

  1. Interactive teaching with mobile devices
This workshop will introduce three web-based applications (Poll Everywhere, Socrative, Padlet) that can take advantage of mobile devices to increase student engagement and interaction in large groups and seminars.
  2. Designing engaging visual presentations
This workshop will introduce two different types of presentation tools (Prezi and NearPod) that academic staff can use to create more dynamic and interactive presentations.
  3. Introduction to Adobe Connect
This interactive workshop introduces the leading web conferencing system.  Adobe Connect facilitates one-to-one or multiparty communication via the web and is an ideal solution for online meetings or tutorials.
  4. Creating screen- and pod- casts for more interactive resources
This workshop session will introduce a number of free tools (including ScreenR and Vocaroo) that academic staff can use to record audio or video straight from their PC or laptop.
  5. Digital note-making and bookmarking tool
This workshop will look into the best way teaching staff and researchers can use web-based tools and mobile apps (Evernote, Diigo and Pocket) to assist with their everyday workflow, organisation and productivity.

Workshop staples

In addition to the above workshops, we will also be offering our four standard workshops, all of which will run throughout the academic year:

  • Introduction to Study Direct
  • Creating and using Quizzes in Study Direct
  • Introduction to e-submission and e-feedback
  • Using lecture capture and media upload in your teaching

If you would like a training session that is specific and tailored to your school/department, contact your school liaison learning technologist who will be happy to arrange this for you.

Future courses

As a team, we are always on the lookout for new technologies and new ideas to use in teaching and learning. If you feel that there are technologies out there that you feel staff would benefit from us running a training session on, either institution-wide or subject-specific, then please do not hesitate to contact us at tel@sussex.ac.uk with your ideas and suggestions. Thank you!
