To start the new academic year, Technology Enhanced Learning have revamped our programme of staff development workshops with a brand new list of sessions for the Autumn term.

From ‘Learning by creating with smartphones’ to ‘Augmented reality and virtual reality in the classroom’ this range of workshops aims to provide you with the tools and ideas to help you make the most of technology in your teaching and prepare for the term ahead.

This term’s workshops pick up on themes that we have been hearing about across campus for example the implementation of the flipped learning approach or how to better engage international students. Below are three new workshops that we have picked out to tell you more about:

Flipped learning: from transmission to active engagement

Wednesday 28th September 14:00-16:00
Venue: Jubilee 155

This workshop will provide an introduction to flipped learning. The session will be delivered in a flipped style to give participants the experience of how this would work in practice. During the session, participants will be guided to plan a flipped lesson, with a focus on considering how to facilitate active learning using technology and methods of peer instruction.  Strategies for engaging students with pre-class content will also be explored.

Reaching out to international students through technology

Tuesday 4th October 15:00-16:30
Venue: 133 Essex House

It is often difficult to help international students to integrate into Higher Education teaching contexts in the United Kingdom. This session will give participants the opportunity to explore ways of catering for different international students through language learning technologies and alternative social media platforms. We will try using a variety of relevant apps and discuss ways in which these could be used to improve learning outcomes for different groups of students. If you want to learn about Weibo, WeChat and digital text analysis for language learning, as well as a range of other tools, then come along.

Tools that we will explore include: Twitter, the popular microblogging service; Storify, a tool to create curated stories; Periscope, a live streaming service; and Vine, the six second video creation tool.
