{"id":85,"date":"2017-03-28T10:08:50","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T09:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/automationanxiety\/?page_id=85"},"modified":"2017-03-28T10:08:50","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T09:08:50","slug":"automation-anxiety-and-the-technological-unconscious","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/automationanxiety\/abstracts\/automation-anxiety-and-the-technological-unconscious\/","title":{"rendered":"Automation Anxiety and the Technological Unconscious"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Picking up on the reference to subjectivity implicit in the notion of automation anxiety this presentation considers briefly some possible ways in which one might develop the notion of a technological unconscious &#8211; a term with some currency within the social and human sciences &#8211; so as to render it productive for thinking about affective dispositions in relationship to developments in information technology. If we can speak coherently about automation anxiety, I would argue, this is because populations have some troubling experience of automation in their daily lives already. Banal though the point may be, it raises interesting questions about how people come to know technology and what we can learn from the troubled relation to it that automation anxiety betokens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/clas\/people\/andrew.goffey\">Andrew Goffey<\/a> is an Associate Professor and Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/Research\/Groups\/CCT\/\">Centre for Critical Theory<\/a> at the University of Nottingham. He is the author (with Matthew Fuller) of\u00a0<em>Evil Media<\/em>, the editor (with Eric Alliez) of\u00a0<em>The Guattari Effect<\/em>\u00a0and (with Roland Faber) of<em>\u00a0The Allure of Things<\/em>.\u00a0He is currently writing books on the politics of software and on the work of F\u00e9lix Guattari and is doing research on institutional analysis and on the materiality of information.
