In      science too, interdisciplinary research is gaining ground<\/li>\n<li>Antonia Fraser and Harold Pinter are made honorary graduates<\/li>\n<li>At the Winter Graduation ceremony five Sussex professors are given      honorary degrees in recognition of their careers at Sussex: Roger      Blin-Stoyle, Colin Eaborn, Sir John Lyons, Martin Rees and Hans Singer<\/li>\n<li>Plans are developed to build accommodation for nearly 600      students; the most ambitious building programme since the 1960s<\/li>\n<li>Funds are raised to buy around 60 small houses in Brighton to      provide reasonably priced rented accommodation<\/li>\n<li>The Chemistry Department find a new area of carbon chemistry,      Buckminster Fullerenes, proving Harry Kroto\u2019s conjecture<\/li>\n<li>CCE celebrated its 21st anniversary. Its activities have      increased ten-fold since its beginnings in 1969. Twenty-five courses ran      in 1969; 300 now run. The Centre is involved in the planning of provision      explicitly aimed at providing access to full-time education particularly      for non-traditional students<\/li>\n<li>The first Masters in Computer Technology in Manufacture is awarded      jointly by the University and Brighton Polytechinc to five graduates in      January 1990. This is been followed by an MSc in Management of Technology      in January 1990 and a Diploma in Social Work under a tripartite agreement      between Sussex, the Polytechnic and East Sussex Social Services Department.
