{"id":280,"date":"2012-09-21T15:37:08","date_gmt":"2012-09-21T15:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/?p=280"},"modified":"2012-11-26T09:22:50","modified_gmt":"2012-11-26T09:22:50","slug":"observing-tattoos-and-textiles-with-davison-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/2012\/09\/21\/observing-tattoos-and-textiles-with-davison-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Observing Tattoos and Textiles with Davison High"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s Dr Lucy Robinson&#8217;s report on a great visit from students from Davison High:<\/p>\n<p>On Friday 14<sup>th<\/sup> September a group of 14 Year 10 students taking the BTEC in Fashion from Davison High School came to the archive to explore attitudes to body adornment (particularly tattooing).\u00a0 Their teacher Ms Jane Green had arranged the visit to help them think in different ways about their own projects \u2026.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-281\" title=\"Group shot\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Group-shot-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Group-shot-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Group-shot-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Group-shot.jpg 1378w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>As well as being thoroughly enjoyable, it was a very useful way of exploring how the Observing the 80s project could engage with BTEC level students, and also thinking about its possibilities beyond History and the humanities.\u00a0 After a short introduction to the archive and to the history of tattooing the students pinpointed some interesting ideas about how tattooing itself could be seen as a form of Life History (as a way of a being an \u2018individual\u2019 and as a way of marking important life experiences) as well as some of the down sides of leaving a permanent mark on the body.\u00a0 We looked at two Directives.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly we all looked at Part One, Spring on Social Divisions.\u00a0 In the final part of this section the Directive asks<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagine that you enter a bus or train. All the window seats are occupied and you must sit next to someone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What thoughts might go through your mind as you make your decision? Whom would you prefer not to sit <\/strong><strong>next to and why? Be honest!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/specialcollections.lib.sussex.ac.uk\/CalmView\/docs\/Spring%201990%20Directive.pdf\">Spring 1990 directive<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second Directive we looked at was part 2 of Summer 1999.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you, or has anyone close to you, thought of having any <\/strong><strong>part of your body pierced or tattooed? We would be <\/strong><strong>interested in hearing what you think about these forms of <\/strong><strong>body decorations whatever your personal experience. <\/strong><strong>If you do have personal experience of either form, please tell <\/strong><strong>us about it in detail &#8211; when you had it done, why you wanted it <\/strong><strong>done, where it was carried out, which part of your body, what <\/strong><strong>other people thought about it. If you had it done years ago, what do you feel about it <\/strong><strong>now? What do you feel in general about body piercing and tattoos?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stories please\u2026 and drawings or photos if that\u2019s possible. Please take care about <\/strong><strong>confidentiality. Don\u2019t use real names.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/specialcollections.lib.sussex.ac.uk\/CalmView\/docs\/Summer%201999%20Directive.pdf\">Summer 1999 Directive<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-282\" title=\"students working\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/students-working-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/students-working-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/students-working-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/students-working.jpg 1378w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>Listening to the students talk about how they should treat the sources, and how they would like their own words to be treated, reiterated many of the discussions we have had as a team around privacy, respect and the importance of understanding observers\u2019 contributions in context.\u00a0 They also came up with intuitive insights in how to make sense of what observers said, and how they said it.\u00a0\u00a0 They noted the informality of the responses which made a change from the sort of evidence they might have come across elsewhere and made some useful distinctions between the archive as a building and as a collection of objects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c I enjoyed reading the letters from ages ago, because we got to see how that person thought\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed looking at the archives because it is a piece of history.\u00a0 What fascinates me the most is how we have changed over the years and our view on social matters\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI now know what an archive is and why people write, and that sometimes people don\u2019t write and answer the question they just write about anything they want to get off their chest\u201d. (This particular point seems to sum up the intrigue and possible frustrations of working with the MOP sources)<\/p>\n<p>They also found some of their own expectations challenged.\u00a0 \u201cI know now that not everyone dislikes tattoos and piercing\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know that people were so fussed over who they sat next to on a bus\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I enjoyed looking at past documents and seeing what people thought about other people, body adornments and the world.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learnt that not many of the documents show that people like tattoos\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students also developed a sense of change over time (and not).\u00a0 One student learnt that \u201ceven in the 90s people still had quite narrow minded view concerning body adornment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283\" title=\"Jessica and students\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Jessica-and-students-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Jessica-and-students-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Jessica-and-students-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/files\/2012\/09\/Jessica-and-students.jpg 1378w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>We are looking forward to seeing some of the students\u2019 Day Diaries of their visit and we also asked them to think of questions they would ask the observers themselves. \u00a0The following sum up the breadth of their ideas?<\/p>\n<p>Where would you sit on a log flume?<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about face tan?<\/p>\n<p>Do you like the idea of being documented in history?<\/p>\n<p>[Would] you change any political decision made by the Coalition?<\/p>\n<p>What do they think about make-up?<\/p>\n<p>Do you like Tattoos\u00a0 and why?
