The issues of bullying and harassment in higher education were receiving widespread media coverage, as was the shortage of academics from black and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, and equality and diversity issues relating to students.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-282\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-image-300x200px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-image-300x200px.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-image-300x200px-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-image-300x200px-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-image-300x200px-200x133.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Despite a number of recent initiatives designed to tackle these (including widening participation programmes and charter mark schemes such as Athena SWAN), it was clear that the UK higher education sector needed a new approach to improve equality and diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Research conducted by Dr <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/188060\">Alison Phipps<\/a> and Dr <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/177249\">Liz McDonnell<\/a> aimed to inspire university staff and managers to work towards cultural change through promoting equality and diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Their work is the subject of a research brief: \u2018Supporting cultural change to improve equality and diversity in Higher Education.\u2019<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Using research commissioned at Imperial College London, they developed an innovative capacity-building framework SHAPE (<strong>S<\/strong>elf-awareness, <strong>H<\/strong>onesty, <strong>A<\/strong>ltruism, <strong>P<\/strong>olitical consciousness, <strong>E<\/strong>mpathy) and a Grounded Action Inquiry methodology, which put staff and students at the heart of culture change planning.<\/p>\n<p>The project \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/chucl.com\/\">Changing University Cultures (CHUCL)<\/a> \u2013 included the creation of a set of free resources, as well as the development of training and consultancy services, and a network of \u2018change agents\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/2016-05-Equality-Diversity-in-HE-Alison-Phipps.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-289 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-212x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-100x141.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-150x212.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-200x283.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-300x424.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-450x636.png 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image-600x848.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2017\/11\/Alison-Phipps-PB-cover-image.png 646w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The briefing paper was circulated to the Universities UK task force at an event that was held in London on 19th April 2016, and a public report on the original research at Imperial College has now been published: <a href=\"https:\/\/chuclblog.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/ic-public-report.pdf\">A review of Imperial College\u2019s institutional culture and its impact on gender equality<\/a>.
