Think again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The RAC\u2019s Be Phone Smart campaign reported that drivers using phones caused 2263 crashes between 2013 and 2017. However, most such campaigns focus on hand-held mobile phone use rather than hands-free. Research carried out by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/1266\">Dr Graham J. Hole<\/a> (University of Sussex) with Dr Gemma F. Briggs and Dr Jim A. J. Drawing from their own research, as well as numerous studies by other academics and public bodies, this policy brief debunks some common misconceptions around the safety of hands-free phone use, and examines some potential solutions for tackling the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The study\u2019s findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The risk of crashing is increased four-fold when\ndrivers engage in a hands-free phone conversation \u2013 as high as when using a\nhand-held phone<\/li><li>Conversations cause the driver to visually\nimagine what they\u2019re talking about. This can interfere with driving\nperformance, as the two tasks compete for similar processing resources<\/li><li>Driving behaviour is impaired more during a\nphone conversation than by having a blood alcohol level at the UK legal limit<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguing that laws need to be updated to address this issue,\nthe researchers also advocate the use of new technologies (with the potential\nto detect hands-free phone use at the wheel) and increased public awareness (via\neducational campaigns and courses), all of which would send a clear message to\ndrivers around the risks of hands-free phone use while driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the policy brief: \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2019\/01\/2018-11-Think-talking-on-your-hands-free-is-safe.-Think-again-PB-Hole-Briggs.pdf\">Think\ntalking on your hands-free while driving is safe?
