{"id":821,"date":"2020-05-21T11:08:58","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T11:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/?p=821"},"modified":"2020-05-21T11:09:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T11:09:00","slug":"co-creating-connected-and-intelligent-care-homes-for-people-with-dementia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/co-creating-connected-and-intelligent-care-homes-for-people-with-dementia\/","title":{"rendered":"Co-creating Connected and Intelligent Care Homes for People with Dementia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Connected Care aims to address three main challenges that\ncare homes face with regards to people living with dementia <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Care homes are increasingly challenged by a\nrising number of people living with dementia and a simultaneous demand to\nimprove quality of care amidst limited funding and staff shortages. <\/li><li>Although innovation is associated with better\nquality of care, there is limited research looking into the ways in which\ndigital technology, including the Internet of Things and sensors, could help\ncare homes deliver better care for people with dementia. <\/li><li>Scholarly research has highlighted that top-down\nimplementations of technology fail to deliver their potential benefits when\nthere is limited user buy-in. In the context of care homes, care workers,\nresidents and their families are often under-represented in technological\ndevelopments.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-100x133.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933-900x1200.jpg 900w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/policy-engagement\/files\/2020\/05\/thumbnail_20200127_151933.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing upon the principles of participatory research and\nfollowing qualitative methodology, the team has engaged with care homes in\nBrighton and Hove and West Sussex, using interviews and observations in order\nto gain an insight into what technology is currently like within care homes,\nand what gaps are there in the technology assisting care home staff, people\nwith dementia, and their families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preliminary analysis of key findings suggested care home\nstaff and managers expect technology to assist in their work in many ways, some\nof which include helping detect, monitor and\/or predict critical events such as\nfalls and then providing an alarm to staff in a timely manner, undertaking and\nautomating administrative type of work (such as typing notes), and providing\ncare home staff with timely and up-to-date information when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People with dementia who reside in care homes and their\nfamilies\/carers expect that technology will offer a single platform of\ncommunication between residents and their families to sustain their family\nrelationship, be user-friendly adjusted to the varied needs, skills and\ncognitive ability of people with dementia whilst also offering opportunities to\nsimulate residents\u2019 cognitive capacities, and also be affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Connected Care project is funded by an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account grant.
