{"id":2238,"date":"2020-10-05T13:09:08","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T13:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/sussexenergygroup\/?p=2238"},"modified":"2024-02-13T15:30:37","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T15:30:37","slug":"project-update-creds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/sussexenergygroup\/2020\/10\/05\/project-update-creds\/","title":{"rendered":"Project update: CREDS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>This update is shared in SEG\u2019s autumn 2020 newsletter. <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/spru\/research\/themes\/sussexenergygroup\/mailinglist\"><em>Join our new mailing list<\/em><\/a><em> to get the latest updates about our research and events on transitions to sustainable, low-carbon energy systems.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creds.ac.uk\/\">Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions (CREDS)<\/a> aims to understand the changes in energy demand needed for the transition to a secure and affordable low-carbon energy system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SEG researchers lead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creds.ac.uk\/digital-society\/\">CREDS\u2019 digital society theme<\/a>, researching the effects that information and communication technologies (ICTs) are having have on energy consumption and carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u2019s been happening in CREDS\u2019 digital society theme recently\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media coverage. <\/strong>With more of us working from home than ever, our April 2020 paper <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ab8a84\"><em>A systematic review of the energy and climate impacts of teleworking<\/em><\/a> received widespread interest from the media and policy makers. The coverage focussed on the paper\u2019s perhaps surprising finding &#8211; that teleworking does not necessarily save energy. Read about it in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2020\/05\/01\/working-home-may-not-better-planet-study-says\/\">the Telegraph<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessgreen.com\/feature\/4014673\/home-greener-option\">Business Green<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/coronavirus-lockdown-working-from-home-energy-carbon-emissions-environmentally-friendly-423993\">inews.co.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blog. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/sussexenergygroup\/2020\/06\/30\/lockdown-lifestyle-does-working-from-home-reduce-carbon-emissions\/\"><em>Lockdown Lifestyle: Does Working from Home Reduce Carbon Emissions?<\/em><\/a> explores the teleworking paper mentioned above. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Event.<\/strong> Following the success of our November 2019 Innovation Forum on Energy Service Business Models, the Greater Brighton Energy Working Group is undertaking a series of innovation forums for the Greater Brighton region, which SPRU will lead. Starting in November 2020, the forums will bring regional actors together to learn and collaborate on the delivery of the Greater Brighton Energy Plan, ultimately contributing to the future energy security and sustainability of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Partnership.<\/strong> We\u2019ve been working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.catapult.org.uk\/capabilities\/digital-and-data\/living-lab\/\">Energy Systems Catapult\u2019s Living Lab<\/a> on our <em>User acceptance of smart homes <\/em>project, to find out why people heat their homes the way they do. New paper <a href=\"http:\/\/sro.sussex.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/93461\/\"><em>Humanizing heat as a service: Cost, creature comforts and the \u201cenergy phenomenology\u201d of smart heating controls in the United Kingdom<\/em><\/a> explores the many different experiences, preferences, identities and needs which shape people\u2019s heating practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New projects.<\/strong> We\u2019ve launched two new projects exploring the energy demand implications of technologies that Covid-19 has brought into the public eye: <em>The Energy Impacts of 5G Technologies<\/em>, and <em>Teleworking and UK Energy Demand<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New publications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ab8a84\/meta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>A systematic review of the energy and climate impacts of teleworking<\/em><\/a><em>.&nbsp;A.
