About

The Sussex Phenomenology Research Group is a graduate student run research group which aims to bring together those working in and around phenomenology at the University of Sussex with those doing so elsewhere.

Sussex has been home to some of the leading lights in recent phenomenological philosophy. It has also seen the development of a rich and varied discussion with those working in other fields, such as critical social thought and deconstruction. Through the research presence of those working on phenomenology and the popular MA and undergraduate courses in phenomenology Sussex has built a reputation for being one of a few universities in the UK which offers a deep engagement with phenomenological thought, today and in the past.

For the last three years this area of specialisation has crystallised into an annual graduate conference in phenomenology. The conference, which consists of a single stream so as to maximise the feedback graduate presenters receive, has been a great success and has drawn speakers and attendees from across the globe. Whilst focusing on a different theme each year the conference has remained broad in its choice of speakers and in the discussions which have taken place. The aim has been, and remains, to provide a place for those newly engaging with phenomenology to present original research and to receive constructive criticism both from their peers and from those more established in academia. The quality of the papers and discussion has been consistently high and the keynote papers have offered presenters and attendees access to some of the most cutting edge research going on in phenomenology at the moment.

This research group, whilst focused on the graduate conference, is not limited to preparing this one event and we encourage those of you on phenomenological projects, broadly construed, to get in contact if you believe that we might like to advertise your events or to co-organise a workshop, lecture, or symposium.
