We provide skills training on how large AI systems can support research and learning, with an emphasis on critical information and digital literacy. Our workshops cover topics such as prompting skills, AI-assisted literature searching, and evaluating outputs. Aligning with UNESCO\u2019s human-centred approach, we emphasise that AI should support, not replace, human critical thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;We have developed a core information literacy programme that currently includes the sessions Introduction to AI, Literature Searching with AI and Mapping the literature with AI. These sessions focus on how LLMs can be used in academic research and to support learning, providing students with foundational knowledge of AI capabilities, limitations, and effective prompting skills. Workshops aim to build critical information literacy skills, including understanding model architecture and behaviour and evaluating AI-generated outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;We are continuing to develop our offer, with an intermediate-level session that will build on these foundational workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about our current offer on our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/library\/teaching-and-events\/staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teaching support pages<\/a>. If you would like to discuss how we can support AI literacy in your modules, please contact the team at&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:library.training@sussex.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">library.training@sussex.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nick Heavey, Teaching and Learning Librarian.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.sussex.ac.uk\/p218804-nicholas-heavey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Heavey<\/a>, who leads on the development and delivery of the Library\u2019s teaching strategy, will be presenting at the AI CoP meeting.&nbsp; See details of the event at the top of this bulletin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>From ITS:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>ITS have published a news item regarding AI use in meetings here: <a href=\"https:\/\/staff.sussex.ac.uk\/news\/article\/70182-ai-tools-in-meetings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI tools in meetings : Staff Hub : University of Sussex<\/a>.&nbsp; Please familiarise yourself with the expectations regarding any use of AI tools to minute or record meetings, and only use Microsoft CoPilot, ensuring that you are logged in using your Sussex credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>From Educational Enhancement:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>February 2026 saw the arrival of an AI tool, Einstein, which purported to enable students to bypass the work of studying and offered to complete assignments on students&#8217; behalf.  The tool launched week commencing 23rd February and by 27th February the website had closed down.  This article from THE* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/strange-case-einstein-ai-spotlights-chatbot-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strange case of \u2018Einstein AI\u2019 spotlights chatbot concerns<\/a> explains that the creator, Advait Paliwal, was issued a cease and desist notice from CMG Worldwide, which&nbsp;manages the&nbsp;licensing rights for the Einstein name.  There are also reports that Instructure, who own Canvas, issued a similar order.  At the time of writing this bulletin, the site is inactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We understand that reports of tools like this are concerning.  Educational Enhancement has published blog posts here <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/learning-matters\/2025\/12\/12\/episode-12-talking-to-students-about-generative-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Episode 12: Talking to Students about Generative AI | Learning Matters<\/a> and guidance here <a href=\"https:\/\/staff.sussex.ac.uk\/teaching\/enhancement\/support\/artificial-intelligence\/engaging-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Talking with students about AI : Artificial Intelligence in teaching and assessment : &#8230; : Educational Enhancement : Staff Hub : University of Sussex<\/a> for talking to students about AI tools, which we hope you find helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*University of Sussex staff can access Times Higher Education articles using their university login details. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2>Training and Learning Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The JISC Introduction to Generative AI in Education course starts again on 1<sup>st<\/sup> March.&nbsp; Sign up here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/training\/an-introduction-to-generative-ai-in-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jisc<\/a>.&nbsp; The course runs throughout the year and you can join at different points<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also from JISC, Sussex staff and students have access to the Building Digital Capabilities Discovery Toolkit which includes resources about using AI.&nbsp; Access the tool here <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcapability.jisc.ac.uk\/our-service\/discovery-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Discovery tool | Building digital capability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Educational Enhancement has produced a self-study course on using AI which Sussex staff can enrol on <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.sussex.ac.uk\/enroll\/MCFLFT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2>Across the Sector<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Published towards the end of 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/tomchatfield.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tom Chatfield\u2019s<\/a> white paper <em>AI and The Future of Pedagogy <\/em>can be accessed via Sage here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sagepub.com\/explore-our-content\/white-papers\/2025\/11\/03\/ai-and-the-future-of-pedagogy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI and the Future of Pedagogy<\/a>.&nbsp; Chatfield, a British tech philosopher with a special interest in critical thinking, AI, and future skills, makes the point that \u201cno matter how powerful AI systems become, they will only ever be part of a learning process\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cno matter how powerful AI systems become, they will only ever be part of a learning process\u201d<\/p><cite>Chatfield &#8211; <em>AI and The Future of Pedagogy<\/em>, 2025.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2>Further Afield<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>One of WonkHE&#8217;s recent &#8220;long reads&#8221; came from Jim Dickinson, reflecting on AI and the exciting challenge it presents to &#8220;a system of higher education built on pretence, performance and proxies&#8221;.  You can find the article here: <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkhe.com\/blogs\/the-end-of-pretend-ai-and-the-case-for-universities-of-formation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The end of pretend \u2013 AI and the case for universities of formation | Wonkhe<\/a>.  <\/li><li>Sussex Alumna and former Pro VC, Emerita Professor of Learner Centred Design at UCL, and CEO of Educate Ventures Research Limited, <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/rose-luckin-5245003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Rose Luckin<\/a>, spoke with Carmen Tomas for the Higher Learning Exchange podcast about her <strong>three decades working with AI in Education<\/strong>.&nbsp; Rose\u2019s wealth of experience spanning computer science studies in the early 90s, through a career focusing on teaching and learning, is evident in this interesting conversation.&nbsp; Listen by following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hlexpodcast.com\/post\/s2-i-e8-three-decades-of-ai-in-education-what-does-research-say-professor-rose-luckin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">links from this page<\/a>.<\/li><li>The BBC shared details of its AI Unpacked Week (2-8 March) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/2026\/bbc-ai-unpacked-to-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> with some elements already available on iPlayer.  The tone of what I&#8217;ve seen so far has been rather pessimistic, although I am very pleased that Nicholas Bailey is back on the EastEnders credits (more from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/soaps\/eastenders\/eastenders-patrick-trueman-talks-dead-son-anthony-bbc-iplayer-newsupdate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Radio Times here<\/a>), but it&#8217;s not all doom-and-gloom and the project includes some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/videos\/clylg0egwxyo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">useful resources for people who want to learn more about AI here<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Join the Teaching and Learning with GenAI Community:&nbsp;If you\u2019d like to join the community and be first to hear about events.
