For trainee teachers and social workers, however, access to private details can present an immediate problem, for example;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>when on placement in a school<\/li>\n<li>if vulnerable adults ask to \u2018friend\u2019 you on Facebook<\/li>\n<li>if a supervisor reads a \u2018bad day at work\u2019 post<\/li>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is scenarios like these that Duncan Mackrill, Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sussex, explores with\u00a0his students at the very beginning of their university life during induction week.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Students can sometimes be under the impression that as their social networking presence is for their lives outside their professional placement, it is separate and not relevant to their professional work. However, this is far from the truth and this attitude can lead to some real problems which in some cases can even mean having to leave their course.<\/em><\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_1114\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 148px\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/10\/Duncan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1114 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/10\/Duncan-138x150.jpg\" alt=\"Duncan\" width=\"138\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><em>Duncan Mackrill, Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Education and Social Work<br \/>\n<\/em><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p><em>Students training on a professional course need to think differently about their online profile and who has access to this. Untick all of the options so that no blocks are available for public viewing.<\/li>\n<li>And finally&#8230;go to your photo block (and other blocks including groups block, friends block, etc) and click on the <b>edit pencil<\/b> and select <b>hide<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Your Facebook page should now be private.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Additional Advice<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Last thing, make sure your banner and your personal profile picture is an image with information that you wish to share. No matter what your settings, these two images will be available.
