{"id":1530,"date":"2014-12-02T08:30:25","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T07:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/?p=1530"},"modified":"2014-12-09T14:00:28","modified_gmt":"2014-12-09T13:00:28","slug":"sussexmtw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/12\/02\/sussexmtw\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile Technologies Week round up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two weeks ago University of Sussex staff from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/library\">Library<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\">Technology Enhanced Learning<\/a> team came together to organise and deliver a week of workshops, seminars, drop-ins and challenges revolving around the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/library\/mtw\">mobile technologies<\/a>. These sessions ran throughout the week and were held all over the University campus. Interested parties from the Hive research group, the Careers and Employability Centre and IT services also got involved to ensure the week had a variety of different workshops that were relevant for students, faculty, researchers and professional services staff.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Monday<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The week kicked off with learning technologists Pete Sparkes and Anne Hole (TEL) running a session on <i>\u2018Getting the most out of your iPad\u2019. <\/i>This session was aimed at beginners and covered the basics such as: customising the home screen; downloading and organising apps; connecting your email; accessibility features and how to secure your device.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1535\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1535\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1535 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/12\/Informatics-workshop-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Informatics workshop\" width=\"280\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/12\/Informatics-workshop-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/12\/Informatics-workshop-100x56.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/12\/Informatics-workshop-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/12\/Informatics-workshop-200x112.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/12\/Informatics-workshop-450x253.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/12\/Informatics-workshop.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How to build a simple mobile 3D\/AR App for teaching and learning<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first afternoon session on Monday was delivered by Martin White and Ben Jackson of the Informatics department and revolved around building a mobile 3D augmented reality app. Whilst this session was tricky at times\u00a0it\u00a0was also eye-opening to the advantages that Augmented Reality can offer.<\/p>\n<p>The second\u00a0afternoon session, delivered by Julian Robinson and Sian Cox from the library, demystified e-books and went into detail about the process of accessing and navigating e-books. This was followed up by a great blog post from Julian called \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/11\/18\/ebooks-whats-not-to-love-sussexmtw\/\">E-books &#8211; What\u2019s not to love?<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Tuesday<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday began with the Careers and Employability Centre offering a session on careers in the mobile and digital sector. CEC\u2019s Andy Howard delivered an informative workshop about job searching and careers in the mobile and digital sector. He spoke about the benefits of social media, particularly LinkedIn, in building professional networks through active engagement with these platforms. In addition to advertising vacancies, we saw how they can also provide examples of the career progression of particular individuals and the additional skills required for these roles. The technologies discussed included <a href=\"http:\/\/padlet.com\/\">Padlet<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/11\/11\/socrative-visualise-student-understanding\/\">Socrative<\/a> and the participants had fun with the different ways they could respond to polls using <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/09\/30\/what-is-poll-everywhere-interactive-mobile-and-now-at-sussex\/\">Poll Every<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/09\/30\/what-is-poll-everywhere-interactive-mobile-and-now-at-sussex\/\">where<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s final session, \u2018Study Smart not hard &#8211; Apps to improve study skills\u2019, was led by Sandy Sommer, Study Skills Adviser, with a contribution by Anne Hole, Learning Technologist. The session \u00a0explored web tools and digital apps that can \u00a0improve time management and study skills. Apps and tools discussed included <a title=\"Wunderlist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderlist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wunderlist<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diigo.com\/\">Diigo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mystudylife.com\/\">MyStudyLife<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cueprompter.com\/\">Cueprompter<\/a> and information on \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0some of these can be found on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/09\/23\/study-smart-5-mobile-apps-for-students\/\">TEL blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Wednesday<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The middle of the week saw the very popular \u2018Learning Apps and Breakfast Baps\u2019 workshop. This session took \u00a0the format of an App Swap Breakfast (developed by Fiona MacNeil at the University of Brighton) with each member of the TEL team introducing \u00a0an app they liked (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.camscanner.com\/\">CamScanner<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vine.co\/University.of.Sussex.Library\">Vine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/evernote.com\/skitch\/?utm_source=interspire\">Skitch<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redjumper.net\/bookcreator\/\">BookCreator<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/\">ThingLink<\/a>) and showed how it could be used to create a learning resource. Some participants then came forward to share apps that they had been using (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.memrise.com\/\">Memrise<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cloudon.com\/\">CloudOn<\/a>) before the participants were put into teams and asked to \u2018App smash\u2019. This involved \u00a0using a combination of two or more of the apps they\u2019d seen so far that day to create anything they wanted. Taking one service each, the three presenters discussed the uses of <a href=\"http:\/\/bobnational.net\">Box of Broadcasts<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jiscmediahub.ac.uk\/\">Jisc Media Hub<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sounds.bl.uk\/\">British Library Sounds<\/a>. The first was an inspiring talk by the University\u2019s own Dr\u00a0Sharif Mowlabocus (Media Studies) on using Twitter in lectures. This was followed by Professor Simon Lancaster (University of East Anglia) who spoke passionately about the benefits of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knewton.com\/flipped-classroom\/\">flipped learning<\/a> and the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/learningtechnologies\/prs\">student response systems<\/a> to encourage collaborative learning. Both talks were received warmly and sparked a lot of chatter on Twitter using the week\u2019s hashtag \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sussexmtw\">#sussexmtw<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Friday<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>After the passion and fervour of Thursday&#8217;s seminars, Friday\u2019s sessions promised to be slightly more casual but equally as enjoyable. Another Library\/TEL collaboration saw Pete Sparkes and Antony Groves deliver a practical session on using an iPad to record and edit a short video. After a brief talk at the start the participants were split into groups and asked to create a 3 minute video using only an iPad and an app called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wevideo.com\/\">WeVideo<\/a>. This hands on experience gave each participant the opportunity to film and edit the video clip whilst thinking of creative ways to make it engaging.<\/p>\n<p>The final session of the week, \u2018Apps for researchers\u2019 was delivered by the University\u2019s Hive research group. Speakers Dr Andres Guadamuz, a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law, \u00a0Dr Catherine Pope, digital skills trainer and author of <a href=\"http:\/\/thedigitalresearcher.com\/about\/\">The Digital Researcher<\/a>, and Miroslav Batchkarov, a PhD researcher in Informatics, presented a range of apps to boost productivity and assist research. These included Microsoft OneDrive, Hootsuite, Evernote and Lyx. The presentation was followed by a lively discussion in which everyone had the opportunity to share experiences of using apps in research.
