What brings them together is the aim of sharing knowledge, and technology is making that possible with an ease and on a scale previously unimaginable.<\/p>\n<p>To get a better idea of what Open Education can be, we asked some colleagues what it means to them.<\/p>\n<p>Openness influences the way that Dr Lucy Robinson (History) behaves as an academic:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Lucy-Robinson-square.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2112\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Lucy-Robinson-square.jpg\" alt=\"Lucy Robinson square\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u2018Open education is about more than free access alone, it&#8217;s about being open to new ways of working with colleagues, with our students and with our communities.\u2019 Lucy Robinson<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <!--more--><br \/>\nLucy is currently working on a TEL innovation project that will use free resources and tools to create learning resources (see her blog post about <a href=\"https:\/\/drlucyrobinson.wordpress.com\/2015\/02\/04\/prizes-for-the-punks\/\">DIY Digital: Doing Punk Online<\/a>) and worked with the Library and the Mass Observation Archive to create <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/\">Observing the 80s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Harvell (Library) explains how the \u2018Observing the 80s\u2019 project developed understanding of Open Education at Sussex and allowed us to share valuable learning materials:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Jane-Harvell-square.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2111\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Jane-Harvell-square-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Jane Harvell\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Jane-Harvell-square.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Jane-Harvell-square-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>It has been hugely valuable to work with our Mass Observation Archive material to develop Open Educational Resources as part of the Jisc-funded \u2018Observing the 80s\u2019 project. Carefully applying an appropriate Creative Commons Licence, digitising, as well as depositing the material in a number of repositories such as JORUM, has released this popular material for free unfettered access with permissions to retain, reuse, revise, remix to much wider audiences. Importantly the process also enabled staff involved to develop a deeper understanding of the value and application of Open Education.\u2019 Jane Harvell<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Learning together in the open<\/h3>\n<p>Sharing knowledge openly does not have to be about big projects and institutional holdings. A lot of learning happens informally online through Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) and this aspect of Open Education is important to Sue Beckingham (@suebecks on Twitter) from Sheffield Hallam University who researches the use of social media in higher education.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Sue_Beckingham_400x400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2115 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Sue_Beckingham_400x400-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Sue Beckingham\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Sue_Beckingham_400x400-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Sue_Beckingham_400x400-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Sue_Beckingham_400x400-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Sue_Beckingham_400x400-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/Sue_Beckingham_400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Open Education is a rich treasure chest of opportunities which enable shared learning; cooperative and collaborative learning; informal, formal and social learning. It facilitates a collective repository of learning materials; builds communities of practice we can learn with and from; and provides a transparent view of what works and why through communal feedback and peer evaluation.\u2019 Sue Beckingham<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year, Open Education Week at Sussex wrapped up with an open webinar featuring two distinguished guest speakers\u00a0Sheila MacNeill and Catherine Cronin.<\/p>\n<p>This year we are fortunate to have Sheila speaking in person as part of the TEL <i>Reshaping Teaching with Technology<\/i> seminar series on <b>Tuesday 10th March<\/b> (there may still be a few places available &#8211; email <a href=\"mailto:tel@sussex.ac.uk\">tel@sussex.ac.uk<\/a> to check).<\/p>\n<p>Sheila\u2019s presentation will focus on how OERs and open platforms enabled her team to organise an open online course to run alongside the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but that was just one\u00a0manifestation of her ongoing commitment to openness in education:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/02\/Number-2-e1422891398496.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1942 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/02\/Number-2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Sheila MacNeill\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Being open, and sharing is fundamentally what education is all\u00a0about, it\u2019s my <i>modus operandi<\/i>\u2026.Whilst\u00a0I believe there is a place for national and international initiatives, declarations, institutional policies that define open education, for me open education is very personal.\u2019 Sheila MacNeill<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year, Catherine Cronin spoke in the Sussex OEW webinar about \u2018networked educators\u2019 and \u2018networked students\u2019 and later in the year wowed the Association for Learning Technology conference with her keynote \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/V_f7w51tc_M\">Navigating the Marvellous: Openness in Education<\/a>\u2019. Her understanding of Open Education comes from experience, practice and research:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/catherine-cronin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2116 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/catherine-cronin-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Catherine Cronin\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/catherine-cronin-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/catherine-cronin-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/catherine-cronin-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/catherine-cronin-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/03\/catherine-cronin.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>From my perspective as an open learner, educator, and researcher, openness means many things: using open resources, creating and sharing my work (artefacts, but also my thinking and reflections) and supporting students in doing the same. Openness is a license, of course, but not just a license. Openness, for me, is about a spirit of openness, a way of being which invites sharing, feedback, new ideas, and connection with others \u2014 but also an ethos of mutuality and trust. As <a href=\"https:\/\/jennymackness.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/18\/open-academic-practice-how-open-are-you\/\">Jenny Mackness<\/a> beautifully describes it: &#8220;The rewards of open practice come in reciprocity, alternative perspectives, and opportunities for dialogue&#8221;.\u2019 Catherine Cronin<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>How can I get involved with Open Education?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>You may already be involved and not thought of it as \u2018open education\u2019.
