These platforms typically offer members a social space within which to share ideas about teaching, highlight their latest research and showcase their\u00a0work. If you use these platforms, you might also want to consider\u00a0joining\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn<\/a>,\u00a0the professional business networking service.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Why link in?<\/h3>\n<p>LinkedIn describes itself as &#8216;the world&#8217;s largest professional network with 300 million members in over 200 countries and territories around the globe.&#8217; You should consider LinkedIn simply because this is where you will find a vast majority of\u00a0academics and your professional colleagues. LinkedIn is essentially the 21st century version of a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolodex\" target=\"_blank\">rolodex<\/a>\u00a0(image to illustrate above for our younger readers!).\u00a0If you conduct a search in LinkedIn&#8217;s people search for &#8216;academics&#8217;, you will yield a return of over 220,000 results; a sizeable proportion of potential colleagues who could share your research interests, help to raise the profile of your research as well as hold the potential for future collaborative working.<\/p>\n<h3>Getting started<\/h3>\n<p>Select a professional picture that you are happy with, register with LinkedIn\u00a0and then add your qualifications, your academic experience, research awards papers and publications.\u00a0Now that you have a complete profile, you can begin to add your contacts, both past and current, possibly future, from your work history. Updates can include blog posts, new connections that your contacts have recently made, work colleagues\u2019 job anniversaries. It\u2019s the equivalent to a virtual common room.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your profile:<\/strong> use this area to\u00a0edit your profile, such as updating your work experience or your\u00a0qualifications. You can also see who has viewed your profile, as well as\u00a0access your own updates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your connections:\u00a0<\/strong>browse your list of connections. You can find people very easily here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jobs:<\/strong>\u00a0obviously you won\u2019t be looking in here if you are employed at Sussex! But just for reference, this is where you can set private searches to view job vacancies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your interests:<\/strong>\u00a0a place to view your groups, read\u00a0the news of companies that interest you, read articles and news from the universities that you have attended. There is also a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">SlideShare<\/a>\u00a0(which is owned by LinkedIn), allowing you to upload and share your presentations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>LinkedIn Tips<\/h3>\n<p>All spaces have modes\u00a0of behaviour that can optimise your success. Find this feature under the \u2018connections\u2019 tab.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get into groups:\u00a0<\/strong>LinkedIn groups are widely used to make connections as valuable as possible. Take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups\/Higher-Education-Teaching-Learning-2774663\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Higher Education Teaching and Learning group<\/a>, for example. Their mission is &#8216;to develop a global community of higher educational professionals who come together to share their knowledge and expertise in teaching and learning&#8217;, and with\u00a0over 52,000 members, they are a niche pool for you to tap into for teaching and learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contribute:<\/strong> make your expertise known on LinkedIn. It\u2019s a good idea to publish posts, for example, a short post pointing others to your research and publications, or a short blog post on innovative teaching practice. You can also comment on others\u2019 conversations which will allow you to establish yourself as a valued member within your\u00a0community.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Institution groups:\u00a0<\/strong>you can join groups related to your own institution, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups\/University-Sussex-Alumni-Network-23808\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Sussex Alumni group<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/edu\/university-of-sussex-12726\" target=\"_blank\">Sussex University<\/a> on LinkedIn. You will find groups under your \u2018interests\u2019 tab. Popular groups in higher education include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlineuniversities.com\/50-great-linkedin-groups-for-academics\" target=\"_blank\">Inside Higher Ed,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/grp\/home?gid=2356407\" target=\"_blank\">The Post Doc Forum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups?home=&amp;gid=2142364&amp;trk=anet_ug_hm\" target=\"_blank\">Women in higher education unite<\/a>. You can find your discipline-specific group by typing in the details into the search box under groups, or you can even use Google but add the words &#8216;LinkedIn groups&#8217; to your search.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can see\u00a0from the conversation below how useful the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/grp\/home?gid=1791816\" target=\"_blank\">National Science Teachers Association group<\/a> could be to Sussex students training to become science teachers. This allows you to create a CV from your LinkedIn data, choosing from 8 professional templates. It&#8217;s very quick, highly customizable, and you can share your CV via PDF or even an URL to add to your email, Twitter or other social spaces.
