Researchers are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/2015\/aug\/05\/move-over-science-humanities-tech-savvy-research-is-making-waves\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly working with digital <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/2015\/aug\/05\/move-over-science-humanities-tech-savvy-research-is-making-waves\">materials<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/earlyamericanists.com\/2015\/07\/07\/making-the-most-of-your-time-in-the-archives-research-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">using new tools in traditional research locations<\/a>. Reading itself has been <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/07\/22\/digital-devices-take-reading-back-to-its-social-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\">transformed by digital devices<\/a>. So how can you make the most of digital tools and resources for teaching and learning in the Arts and Humanities?<\/p>\n<h3><b>Being a digital academic<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>There is a wide range of ways to use, or get involved with, digital tools and resources. For example <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/336034\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Tim Hitchcock<\/a> (Digital History, HAHP) writes about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/impactofsocialsciences\/2014\/07\/28\/twitter-and-blogs-academic-public-sphere\/\" target=\"_blank\">using Twitter and blogs to make academic practice public<\/a> and publishes <a href=\"http:\/\/historyonics.blogspot.com.au\" target=\"_blank\">his own blog<\/a> while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/115259\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Lynne Murphy<\/a> (Linguistics, English) has recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/staff\/newsandevents\/?id=31428\" target=\"_blank\">received a US grant<\/a> to help write a book based on her very successful blog <a href=\"http:\/\/separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Separated by a Common Language\u2019<\/a>. <!--more--> If you aren\u2019t ready to start blogging yourself you can incorporate blogs into your PLN (Personal Learning Network) by following other academics\u2019 blogs <a href=\"http:\/\/thedigitalresearcher.com\/following-blogs-with-feedly\/\" target=\"_blank\">using a service like Feedly<\/a> (see our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/09\/25\/feedly-make-the-internet-come-to-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">post on Feedly<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Other digital curation platforms such as <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/08\/29\/flipping-beautiful-news-and-digital-curation-on-your-mobile-devices\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flipboard<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoop.it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scoop.it<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearltrees.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pearltrees<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/about.pinterest.com\/en-gb\" target=\"_blank\">Pinterest<\/a> can allow tutors and\/or students to bring together and share relevant content. For example, one teacher used <a href=\"https:\/\/about.flipboard.com\/educators\/a-global-museum-how-flipboard-can-help-bring-a-world-of-ancient-wonders-to-classrooms-half-a-world-away\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flipboard to \u2018curate collections of artifacts\u2019<\/a> for his students and as part of my role as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/ourservice\" target=\"_blank\">Learning Technologist for the Arts and Humanities schools<\/a> I have created an <a href=\"http:\/\/flip.it\/cmNMi\" target=\"_blank\">Arts &amp; Humanities TEL<\/a> Flipboard magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter can be used to engage students with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/jun\/27\/foreign-office-tweets-archduke-events-100th-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\">historical events<\/a> and allow experimentation with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hybridpedagogy.com\/Journal\/the-twitter-essay\/\">new ways of writing<\/a>. Response systems such as <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/09\/30\/what-is-poll-everywhere-interactive-mobile-and-now-at-sussex\/\" target=\"_blank\">Poll Everywhere<\/a> can be used <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.peerinstruction.net\/2013\/06\/10\/3-easy-ways-to-use-clickers-and-peer-instruction-in-the-arts-and-humanities\/\" target=\"_blank\">to support peer learning<\/a> in discursive disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>There are many options for \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/impactofsocialsciences\/2014\/09\/03\/digital-humanities-classroom-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">digital humanities projects that can be inexpensively and easily applied to the undergraduate classroom<\/a>\u2019 using simple to use and free tools. As students engage with such activities they not only learn about their subject but develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/rd\/projects\/building-digital-capability\" target=\"_blank\">digital capabilities<\/a> that will serve them well beyond university.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Digital resources for your discipline<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>As well as the digital activities outlined above there is a wealth of resources available online to support teaching and learning in the Arts and Humanities:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Open Culture<\/a> is a great curation blog whose editor \u2018scours the web for the best educational media\u2019 &#8211; this includes audio books, language lessons, movies and free courses. It is well worth subscribing to the blog or following <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/openculture\">@OpenCulture<\/a> on Twitter to receive updates such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/07\/2200-radical-political-posters-digitized-a-new-archive.html\" target=\"_blank\">2,200 Radical Political Posters Digitized: A New Archive<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2014\/12\/the-tate-digitizes-70000-works-of-art.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Tate Digitizes 70,000 Works of Art; Now Adding 52,000 Letters, Photographs &amp; Sketchbooks from British Artists<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2014\/10\/animated-introduction-to-literary-theory-by-open-university.html\" target=\"_blank\">A Quick Introduction to Literary Theory: Watch Animated Videos from the Open University<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/06\/the-tree-of-languages-illustrated-in-a-big-beautiful-infographic.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Tree of Languages Illustrated in a Big, Beautiful Infographic<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2014\/07\/the-oldest-song-in-the-world.html\" target=\"_blank\">Listen to the Oldest Song in the World: A Sumerian Hymn Written 3,400 Years Ago<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/05\/the-music-of-avant-garde-composer-john-cage-now-available-in-a-free-online-archive.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Music of Avant-Garde Composer John Cage Now Available in a Free Online Archive<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/free-philosophy-ebooks\" target=\"_blank\">135 Free Philosophy eBooks<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Historians and media studies scholars might like the British Library <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/spare-rib\" target=\"_blank\">website devoted to the feminist magazine Spare Rib<\/a> where you can look at content from the magazine and learn about its\u2019 operations and objectives.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in popular media\/culture check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/genome.ch.bbc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">BBC Genome project<\/a> which brings together Radio Times listings from 1923 to 2009 and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmtimemachine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FilmTimeMachine<\/a> which visualises film data. This timeline of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmtimemachine.com\/gender-in-crews-of-top-grossing-films\" target=\"_blank\">gender in crews of top grossing films 1994-2013<\/a> is a good example.<\/p>\n<p>Digital projects have transformed documents of record, such as Hansard (the record of UK parliamentary proceedings) into searchable databases. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hansard-corpus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hansard corpus<\/a> which contains British Parliamentary speeches from 1803-2005 allows fascinating insights into language and politics. <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Bodleian<\/a> allows you to virtually rummage in the great library\u2019s holdings &#8211; with lots of marvellous historical images and documents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/10\/31\/introducing-soundcloud-an-audio-recording-and-sharing-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\">Soundcloud<\/a> has many recordings and playlists that could play an interesting part in learning and teaching &#8211; including the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/berlinwallofsound\/the-berlin-wall-of-sound\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin Wall of Sound<\/a> which demonstrates how sound can be used to explore history. For more audio resources try <a href=\"http:\/\/sounds.bl.uk\/#\" target=\"_blank\">British Library Sounds<\/a> which offers music, drama, literature and oral history recordings from across the globe.<\/p>\n<iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F175613483&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=true&show_comments=true&color=false&show_user=true&show_reposts=false\"><\/iframe>\n<p>These are just a few examples of available digital resources.
