You can download the app from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=tv.periscope.android&amp;hl=en_GB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Google Play<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0(for Andriod users) or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/app\/periscope\/id972909677?mt=8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apple store<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. When you first log in, f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ollow the Periscope users that you already follow\u00a0on Twitter. You will then be notified if they\u00a0broadcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To start your own broadcast, press the red camera icon, title your broadcast\u00a0and a\u00a0notification will then be sent to users that <em>\u2018[Your username]\u00a0is\u00a0live broadcasting for the first time today.\u2019<\/em> Viewers can also be alerted by location of a live broadcast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Using Periscope in higher education<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/blog\/periscope-top-tips-for-using-twitters-latest-app-20-jul-2015\">Jisc\u2019s Top tips for using Twitter\u2019s latest app<\/a> for guidance on using Periscope in higher education. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/staff\/sharon-cook\">Sharon Cook<\/a>,\u00a0Jisc\u2019s account manager for Wales, used Periscope recently to broadcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/events\/connect-more-with-jisc-in-wales-02-jul-2015\">Connectmore with Jisc in Wales<\/a>.\u00a0Sharon shares her experience and suggests various uses, such as;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Live tours of a university campus before open days<\/li>\n<li>Getting students into inaccessible places at inaccessible times, for example streaming to students from a lambing shed in the evening<\/li>\n<li>For student feedback<\/li>\n<li>To promote research<\/li>\n<li>As a way for students to engage with staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Can viewers communicate with the broadcaster?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes. A viewer can tap their finger on screen to\u00a0initiate a\u00a0keyboard to type a question to the broadcaster. Viewers can\u00a0also \u2018show the love\u2019 (the equivalent of \u00a0thumbs up \u2018likes\u2019 on Facebook) by holding a finger on the screen to indicate that they like what they\u00a0see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How do you know if anyone is watching?<b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Usernames appear on the screen, for example an alert such as \u2018Bob123 has joined\u2019 will pop-up\u00a0and\u00a0then fade away. Bob123 is then added to a number of total viewers in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. This is his method: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Every week I find a new piece of scientific research, read the journal article that describes it, and then write a poem that tries to summarise the research in an accessible and entertaining manner.\u2019 Dr Sam Illingworth<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sam broadcast the reading of his poem, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thepoetryofscience.scienceblog.com\/133\/the-fireflys-sex-life-has-been-upset\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The firefly\u2019s sex life has been upset <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; a creative interpretation of the journal paper <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eco.confex.com\/eco\/2015\/webprogram\/Paper55224.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Illuminating the effects of light pollution on fireflies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> using Periscope. This is how I came to learn of the demise of the firefly whilst eating my jacket potato at lunchtime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">View a recording of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/f9nrqo2jwkkr1v8\/The%20Firefly%27s%20Sex%20Life.mp4?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\">Sam\u2019s broadcast<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broadcasts are typically held by Periscope for 24 hours after going live.
