Silvia Lopez Cepero explains that \u2018the use of images in the class allows the teacher to explore new activities and create varied lessons to help students learn vocabulary efficiently and develop their spoken language skills\u2019. For the <i>Show and TEL<\/i> session Silvia demonstrated how she created collages using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fotor.com\">Fotor photo editor<\/a>. Her short presentation showed how easy it was to create professional-looking collections of images and soon everyone was online creating their own collages (like the one above). There was some discussion about where to find suitable images and links to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/help\/cc\">Technology Enhanced Learning web page<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/05\/19\/using-creative-commons-images-in-presentations\/\">blog post<\/a> on using Creative Commons licensed images were shared.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Using games in language learning<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/07\/Andrea.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-310\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/07\/Andrea.jpg\" alt=\"Andrea\" width=\"150\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/07\/Andrea.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/07\/Andrea-100x119.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/305426\">Andrea Vitali<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Games and gamification has been identified as one of the \u2018important developments in educational technology for Higher Education\u2019 by the <a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.nmc.org\/media\/2014-nmc-horizon-report-he-EN-SC.pdf\">NMC Horizon Report 2014<\/a> so it was with great interest that we heard how Andrea Vitali has been using online games in his teaching.<\/p>\n<p>He uses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.vic.gov.au\/languagesonline\/default.htm\">Languages Online<\/a> where he can choose from ready-made games or create his own. The games can then be uploaded or linked to in Study Direct for students to play and learn out of contact hours.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea says that the vast majority of his students, of all ages, \u2018love games, especially when they realize that they are learning while having fun\u2019. The appeal of games is shown by the fact that some students have found the language game app DuoLingo for themselves and are playing it in their own time to develop their language skills. She also had some exciting ideas for ways that technology might be used in future as she says that: \u2018Future technologies have begun to alter the learning space and as an educator it fills me with excitement about what the future may hold.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the workshop Andrea demonstrated <a href=\"http:\/\/padlet.com\/features\">Padlet<\/a>, the online virtual wall. Padlet provides a virtual space where people can post comments, documents, images, weblinks, YouTube videos and audio.
