Learners involved in content curation go beyond searching for information to evaluating what they find, sharing with peers and commenting on their discoveries. It can also be the beginning of a Personal\/Professional Learning Network (PLN) that will sustain someone throughout their career.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We should not forget, however, that curation also has another important role to play in the field of digital preservation. This is generally referred to as \u2018digital curation\u2019 which \u00a0\u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">involves maintaining, preserving and adding value to digital research data throughout its lifecycle\u2019<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcc.ac.uk\/digital-curation\/what-digital-curation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Curation Centre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is becoming increasingly important to think about how materials which are \u2018born digital\u2019 can be preserved against a backdrop of redundant formats and disappearing platforms.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seeking and finding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Knowing how to search effectively online and evaluate digital resources are crucial skills for study and for life. L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ibraries are keen to help students develop this aspect of information\/digital literacy and the University of Sussex Library provides <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/library\/guides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">subject guides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studydirect.sussex.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?id=20813&amp;topic=7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">online tutorials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and workshops for undergraduates and postgraduates all accessible via the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/skillshub\/research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Skills Hub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identifying individuals and organisations who regularly post content in your field can be an excellent complementary way of finding content on an ongoing basis. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.twitter.com\/articles\/215585\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is useful for finding relevant material and discussions and other social media platforms such as Facebook, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/108665397217649878877\/posts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google+<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.linkedin.com\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/1164\/~\/groups---getting-started\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LinkedIn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offer opportunities to get involved in subject-specific groups and communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Subscribing to academic blogs is a very effective way of hearing the latest ideas. A service like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/09\/25\/feedly-make-the-internet-come-to-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feedly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or Inoreader will help you to organise the posts coming in and let you skim through them all in one place on your computer or mobile device.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Choosing who to \u2018follow\u2019 on social media is the first phase of critical thinking. It is important to \u2018curate\u2019 people\/institutions if you are to use your PLN as a content filter and avoid trivial or unreliable posts. Most of the tools for capturing online content to save and\/or share also allow for adding comments which enables students to explain why they have chosen a particular item and how it relates to the topic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital notemaking tools such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/Share-a-local-OneNote-notebook-on-OneDrive-5985a5d5-ec38-4f36-b56a-f09630c23304\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OneNote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/07\/25\/405\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Evernote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have \u2018web clippers\u2019 included so that you can easily capture web pages, annotate and save them in designated \u2018notebooks\u2019. While these offer sharing of content that is not their primary purpose. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diigo.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diigo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/delicious.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delicious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which are mainly seen as cloud-based bookmarking tools also have some sharing options. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other platforms are more focused on content curation, combining the collecting, sorting, annotating and sharing functions. Popular tools in this area are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/business.scoop.it\/features\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scoop.It<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which allows free account users to collect on 1 topic, save up to 10 items per day and share with 2 social networks. You can see how visually appealing it is in this <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoop.it\/u\/ana-cristina-pratas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">example by Ana Cristina Pratas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearltrees.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pearltrees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> allows more collections and items to be added. With a free account all collections are public and there is an upload limit of 1GB. There are some good examples of educators using Pearltrees, such as this on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearltrees.com\/carinavr\/teaching-philosophy\/id3636627\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teaching Philosophy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/about.pinterest.com\/en-gb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pinterest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is good for more visual content. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.pinterest.com\/suebecks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sue Beckingham\u2019s Pinterest boards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> show how it can be used effectively. Users can collaborate on boards. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2014\/08\/29\/flipping-beautiful-news-and-digital-curation-on-your-mobile-devices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flipboard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> makes it easy to find, choose, sort and share content. Users can use the platform to follow blogs, social media and other Flipboard users, then \u2018flip\u2019 these items or others found online into their own themed Flipboard magazines with added comments. This can be done individually or collaboratively.
