What are they and how can we judge if we are digitally skilled or not? We turn to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/guides\/developing-students-digital-literacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jisc framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, originally developed by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jiscdesignstudio.pbworks.com\/w\/page\/46740204\/Digital%20literacy%20framework\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">work of Beetham and Sharpe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2010), to help answer the question of digital literacy.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>Understanding digital skills<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/guides\/developing-students-digital-literacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jisc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> defines digital skills as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018capabilities which fit an individual for living, learning and working in a digital society<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u2019 It is quite a collection. This \u2018living, learning and working in a digital society\u2019 looks to require a vast array of skills to navigate successfully and covers many areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ICT capability\/ literacy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">information, data and media literacies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital creation, innovation and scholarship<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">communication, collaboration and participation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital learning and self development<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital identity and well being.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Jisc digital framework is currently under revision, see the latest by Helen Beetham in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcapability.jiscinvolve.org\/wp\/2015\/06\/11\/revisiting-digital-capability-for-2015\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Revisiting digital capability for 2015\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/10\/Jisc-pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3291 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/10\/Jisc-pic.png\" alt=\"Jisc pic\" width=\"413\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/10\/Jisc-pic.png 413w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/10\/Jisc-pic-300x281.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/10\/Jisc-pic-100x94.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/10\/Jisc-pic-150x141.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/10\/Jisc-pic-200x187.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Keeping digitally fit <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are a number of things you can do to maintain or enhance your digital capability\/literacy. Jisc provides ideas for students, course team members, senior managers, support staff and IT staff. Below is an excerpt from the extensive list provided by Jisc that you can read in their entirety <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/guides\/developing-digital-literacies\/top-tips\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have pulled a favourite from each one: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><b><i>Course teams <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Relax. You don\u2019t have to be an expert in all things digital so long as you keep up to date with developments in your subject community (one size does not fit all).<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>IT managers <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inform students that game-changing technologies (\u2018threshold practices\u2019) require investment of time and effort (learning and teaching staff).<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><b><i>Senior managers <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Become digitally literate yourself \u2013 not to be able to do everything but to be able to provide leadership of an institution in the digital age.<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><b><i>Students <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn how to use the online library catalogue early on. But explore online resources, not limiting yourself to those recommended by tutors. Find academic\/learning portals you can trust, learn to identify authoritative resources.<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>**There wasn\u2019t a tip specifically for academics so I have added one myself**<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><b><i>Academics<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Read how you can embed the digital capability framework into your teaching in the interesting journal article, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchinlearningtechnology.net\/index.php\/rlt\/article\/view\/21453\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Learning from the early adopters: developing the Digital Practitioner.\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Liz Bennet in which she explores how Sharpe and Beetham\u2019s digital capability framework can be applied to lecturers\u2019 digital capability practices.<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are a student and you would like to take on board Jisc\u2019s top tip to learn how to use the online library catalogue, see the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/workshops\/allworkshops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">full list of events and support available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Sussex Library. They\u2019ll be pleased to show you how the catalogue works. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Learn with TEL<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can increase your digital skills by taking part in our Technology Enhanced Learning <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/workshops\/allworkshops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">workshops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. All of TEL&#8217;s workshop and online resources have been mapped to the JISC digital capabilities and by completing a development activity\u00a0you can earn a TEL Open Badge which guide you to which capability you have progressed. These resources are open to everybody, and best of all, they are free. The Open University (OU) has an excellent collection of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/libraryservices\/pages\/dilframework\/understand#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for understanding and engaging in digital practices and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/libraryservices\/beingdigital\/objects\/20\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018My Digital identity\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> course. Learn about <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/webwise\/0\/22717886\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">social networks and blogs via BBC WebWise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, try to make <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.open.ac.uk\/students\/skillsforstudy\/making-audio-recordings.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">audio recordings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with your phone, watch a YouTube video on how to build your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A667plNCzwA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personal Learning Network (PLN)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or read the post <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/net.educause.edu\/ir\/library\/pdf\/ELI7076.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">seven things you should know about WordPress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are completely new to all things digital, visit the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.learnmyway.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn My Way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> website. Learn My Way covers all the basics such as online shopping, email and getting started with making online connections. You can even get help from a human being too via a link to a local digital champion who can give you up to eight sessions of free help.
