The event was hosted to explore the role of technology in helping to develop the \u2018future ready\u2019 learner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Symposium coincided with Jisc\u2019s publication of the \u2018Technology for Employability\u2019 report by Dr Peter Chatterton and Geoff Rebbeck QTLS. Read the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/repository.jisc.ac.uk\/6249\/3\/Technology_for_employability_-_full_report.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">full report here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/news\/unlocking-the-digital-potential-of-graduates-02-dec-2015\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fast read here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Graduate attributes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/shane-sutherland-62a1a26\" target=\"_blank\">Shane Sutherland<\/a>, co-founder of PebblePad, introduced the day with a reflection of what he looks for when employing graduates and placement students. Shane identified the following attributes which will help a graduate get a foot in the door at PebblePad HQ: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">passion for the subject and\/or <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">evidence of having gone beyond the minimal commitments of a degree<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Technology got a mention at this point. E-portfolios can be used as a tool to prove a passion for a subject as well as evidencing having gone beyond the minimal commitments of a degree. E-portfolios however are currently an underused activity in higher education, according to Jisc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>A changing workplace <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are additional aspects to navigate when thinking about graduate employment. The Symposium touched on these, which included: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018portfolio careers\u2019 &#8211; graduates are predicted to change careers numerous times in their lifetimes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">increasing numbers of higher education graduates are competing for a limited number of graduate opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">employer demands are changing unpredictably as technology impacts upon the workplace <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">automation in the workplace is destabilizing the traditional hierarchy of jobs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The question was asked, how can we prepare graduates for the future? Data can be collected to guide us on recruitment trends, yet statistics don\u2019t always make sense for the higher education sector. Shane demonstrated this by showing that the fastest growing job in the last five years on LinkedIn was the zumba instructor (up by 500%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3471\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture1.jpg\" alt=\"Capture\" width=\"420\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture1.jpg 420w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture1-300x122.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture1-100x41.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture1-150x61.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture1-200x81.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tech and project management<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emma Purnell, Senior Learning Technologist at Plymouth University presented a technology and employability project which had been successful in developing students\u2019 confidence and project management skills. Portfolio-based, the project identified students\u2019 interests and matched them with local businesses who offered real world work opportunities. By the end of the project, each student had real world experience which they could evidence in a portfolio to future employers. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Placements, placements, placements<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students had a voice at the Symposium too in the form of three PebblePad placement students (below) from The University of Sunderland. They each spoke about the value of their placements as software developers. Placements were excellent for the students. One downside was that they felt slightly out of touch with the university. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Such high value was placed on the opportunity to take a placement that one student explained that they would not have gone to university had\u00a0a placement\u00a0opportunity not been available. One student had relatives who had degrees but not the jobs that they wanted, and this compounded the idea for them that they needed to have commercial experience as well as a degree. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3437 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture.jpg\" alt=\"Capture\" width=\"580\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture.jpg 580w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture-100x84.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture-150x125.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture-200x167.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/Capture-450x376.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>The graduate employer<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Symposium included recruiters too. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cohesionrecruitment.com\/our-story\/our-people\/will-shepherd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will Shepherd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, CEO and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cohesionrecruitment.com\/our-story\/our-people\/debbie-edmondson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Debbie Endmonson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Talent Director of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cohesionrecruitment.com\/solutions\/graduates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cohesion Recruitment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, were invited to speak about the future ready graduate, what employers were looking for and the impact of technology on recruitment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Cohesion Recruitment, graduate employers are changing. They are opening up to graduates with 2:2s when traditionally 2:1s and above were specified. Technology trends include:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nearly all recruiters are screening applicant social media accounts to view for inappropriate content <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recruitment video interviews are common, with nearly all recruiters using video interviews to assess candidate enthusiasm and ability to articulate achievements. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employers have embraced gamification to engage, assess\/screen and potentially recruit suitable graduates. Examples include GCHQ, London Transport, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/80days.kpmgcareers.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">KPMG\u2019s 80 days around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandstorm.loreal.com\/concept-page-the-game\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">L\u2019Oreal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Companies are engaging with potential recruits before the application process via social media, particularly Twitter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tools such as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mykindacrowd.com\/Challenges\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My Kinda Crowd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> exist to allow students to compete for rewards such as work placements <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cohesion Recruitment wrote their own blog post, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cohesionrecruitment.com\/blog\/graduates-trends-future-ready\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Graduate trends and becoming future ready.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/technology\/articles\/tech-trends-2015-it-worker-of-the-future-report.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3440 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3.png\" alt=\"PP3\" width=\"1067\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3.png 1067w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-1024x539.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-100x53.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-150x79.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-200x105.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-450x237.png 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-600x316.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2015\/12\/PP3-900x474.png 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the example from the Graduate employer <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/technology\/articles\/tech-trends-2015-it-worker-of-the-future-report.html\" target=\"_blank\">Deloitte<\/a>\u00a0shows, graduate recruitment is expanding and diversifying to meet the needs of a new workplace.
