I capture, edit and produce digital media e.g. video and audio&#8230;.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I communicate with other people in a range of digital media e.g. email, presentations, blog posts, video conference, photo sharing, text, twitter, online forums, understanding the differences between these media\u2026.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I curate and repurpose digital media from shared sites\u2026.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I share information with other students and with people in my subject area. I use curation tools such as pinboards, social bookmarking, personal aggregators to bring information together in new ways. I record and manage information for future access and use\u2026.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I share scholarly and professional ideas in a range of digital media.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Apps and activities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are a few ideas for using smartphone apps in or out of the classroom to develop digital capabilities. There are more digital tools for mobile and web use in our <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/learningtechnologies\/apps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A-Z of Apps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Sounds great &#8211; creating audio<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a smartphone and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/audioboom.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Audioboom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> app, students can make short audio recordings to share. Key points from small group discussions and\/or peer interviews can be shared amongst the whole group, commented on and collected into playlists. With a free Audioboom account you can create and upload an unlimited number of recordings up to 10 minutes long; comment on each other\u2019s recordings and curate playlists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Quick and easy video<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why not use student-produced videos as an alternative to presentations? You don\u2019t need a studio &#8211; most students have a video camera in their pocket!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pairs or small groups could use smartphones to record video interviews or \u2018talking head\u2019 presentations then share them using YouTube. If \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/157177?hl=en-GB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unlisted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 is chosen, anyone with the link will be able to view the video but it will not appear in searches. Links to videos could be added to a Study Direct forum or database by students, or uploaded by tutors. For more sophisticated video-making, with editing functionality try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wevideo.com\/mobile\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WeVideo mobile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or perhaps your topic would suit a Vine? These 6 second looping videos are like the audio-visual version of a tweet. There is a real challenge in getting across an idea in a short time. S<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ee more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vine.co\/University.of.Sussex.Library\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vines created by Sussex Library<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whatever type of video students are creating, here are some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2015\/02\/17\/5-tips-for-mobile-filmmakers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tips for mobile filmmakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (please note this was first published in 2015 so the information about the workshop is no longer relevant).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Building collections and sharing resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One way to move from reading and watching to producing is through curating material. In an earlier post we discussed \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2015\/10\/20\/learning-through-finding-choosing-sorting-and-sharing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning through finding, choosing, sorting and sharing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019. For example, see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.pinterest.com\/suebecks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sue Beckingham\u2019s Pinterest boards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on a range of topics from gardening to business with lots of infographics on learning and teaching with social media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students could collaborate on a board for a particular topic or task, or create individual boards and comment on each other\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another great tool that works on smartphones and creates interactive content is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2015\/02\/27\/interactive-visual-learning-with-thinglink\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ThingLink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which could be used as an alternative to posters.
