Exploring how we can use technologies to collaborate and communicate across the globe. \" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/One-World-Week2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/One-World-Week2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/One-World-Week2-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/One-World-Week2-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/One-World-Week2-450x450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/One-World-Week2.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussexstudent.com\/ents\/event\/1930\/\" target=\"_blank\">One World Week<\/a>\u00a0starts Monday 14th March<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week, 14-20 March, is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussexstudent.com\/ents\/event\/1930\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One World Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the University of Sussex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One World Week is an annual event which features a great programme of events, from performances and competitions to talks and debates, all of which aim to celebrate the diversity of cultures and nationalities here at Sussex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take a look at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussexstudent.com\/ents\/event\/1930\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">programme of events<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> this year featuring a Technology Enhanced Learning seminar!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One World Week\u00a0is\u00a0a great opportunity to look at the ways in which technology can keep students connected with the university, even when they are physically away from the university for long periods of time, such as during placements.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Connect via video conference<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One great way of keeping connected is through the use of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/services\/staffservices\/videoconferencing\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">video conferencing software<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many people use tools such as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skype.com\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Skype<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hangouts.google.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google Hangouts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in their personal lives to keep in contact with friends and families overseas, so why not make use of this familiar technology within the university setting? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Skype and Google Hangouts are great for organising informal online meetings and could be used for example for tutorial sessions with small groups of students. Using a technology that many students are familiar with could make students more comfortable and perhaps encourage engagement in these sessions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the University of Sussex we have an institutional licence for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/services\/software\/list?id=199\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adobe Connect Pro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a video conferencing tool which allows screen sharing and is great for interacting with large groups. Recently Adobe Connect has been used by the Business Liaison and Placements team in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/bmec\/\" target=\"_blank\">School of <\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/bmec\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Business, Management and Economics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (BMEc), with help from their Learning Technologist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/269202\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sally Burr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to help improve the experiences of students away on placement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/227766\" target=\"_blank\">Marni Mcarthur <\/a>of the Business Liaison and Placements team\u00a0had found that students were sometimes feeling disconnected from the university whilst away on placements and so decided to set up a series of webinars in which students could gain information about assessments, ask questions, experience sessions with their peers and prepare for their return to the university. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the first session <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/272546\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ren\u00e9 Moolenaar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Senior Teaching Fellow and Academic Advisor for the Business and Management Professional Placement programme, delivered a short presentation to students and then opened the session for discussion and questions allowing students to address particular concerns. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The session was recorded to allow students to recap as well as for those who were further afield and couldn&#8217;t attend due to time differences. Blogging allows students to keep an account of their experiences and development whilst also enabling them to create a professional online presence. Furthermore, if tutors provide students with regular feedback, a dialogue is created strengthening a student\u2019s link to the university and preparing them for when they return to study at Sussex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A great example of student blogging can be found on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sussexstudents.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SussexStudents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sussexstudents.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> WordPress site<\/a> and features posts from students across the University of Sussex. Managed by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/372541\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Communications Manager<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the posts provide topical help and guidance to students both home and abroad, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sussexstudents.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/19\/the-classroom-us-vs-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Classroom: US vs UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sussexstudents.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/12\/how-to-get-started-your-exchange-in-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to get started on your exchange in Singapore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blogging is a great way of keeping students engaged and is a valuable activity, particularly for those that may be off campus for periods of time and it can familiarise students with a tool that many employers want them to later utilize.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>TEL One World Week event<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3875\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner.png\" alt=\"sharon flynn banner\" width=\"698\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner.png 698w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner-300x114.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner-100x38.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner-150x57.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner-200x76.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner-450x171.png 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/03\/sharon-flynn-banner-600x229.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussexstudent.com\/ents\/event\/1930\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">full programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, this year Technology Enhanced Learning is also running an event during One World Week and will be joined by Sharon Flynn (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sharonlflynn\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">@sharonlflynn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), the Assistant Director at the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National University of Ireland, Galway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a background as an academic in computing science, Sharon has a particular interest in technologies for teaching and learning and she leads the Learning Technologies Team at NUI Galway. As well as supporting staff in the use of technology to enhance teaching activities, Sharon also co-ordinates a module on Learning Technologies on the university&#8217;s PG Diploma in Academic Practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In keeping with the &#8220;One World&#8221; theme, Sharon\u2019s talk will focus on the university campus as one world with various distinct cultural groups. She will ask questions such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does the use of technology on campus help to bridge divides or does it reinforce boundaries?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where campus culture is a barrier to adopting technologies for teaching and learning, is there any evidence such cultures can change?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sharon will share examples of projects and initiatives from her own experience and research to explore aspects of these questions.
