Each stage \u2013 Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition \u2013 is indicative of higher levels of learner engagement.\u00a0 Use of technology at the Modification or Redefinition level is viewed as a transformation in practice.\u00a0 At the Substitution and Augmentation levels technology use represents an enhancement but with little or no function change in practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are of course limitations in these frameworks and indeed in many other educational taxonomies.\u00a0 They represent however useful tools to conceptualise new activities or reconceptualise existing approaches.\u00a0 They prompt us to think about the impact of technology adoption, our own digital capabilities and those of our learners, and the nature of the engagement that the use of technology might facilitate.<\/p>\n<p>There is growing body of research in this area. One interesting example is an article exploring the development of a framework to support creative pedagogical approaches which harness the power of mobile devices by Cochrane et al (2014) published in the Association for Learning Technology\u00a0journal Research in Learning Technology: &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchinlearningtechnology.net\/index.php\/rlt\/article\/view\/24637\" target=\"_blank\">Riding the wave of BYOD: developing a framework for creative pedagogies<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Designing online activities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>What is different about online interaction?\u00a0 In the planning of online activities consideration of the nature of the interaction you seek is key.\u00a0 It is:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>spatially different<\/li>\n<li>potentially temporally different<\/li>\n<li>likely to surface issues of control and direction<\/li>\n<li>likely to require additional skills<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Below is a short checklist to help with the planning of online activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>formal\/informal<\/li>\n<li>formative\/summative<\/li>\n<li>staff\/student led<\/li>\n<li>aims aligned to learning outcomes<\/li>\n<li>technology required<\/li>\n<li>clear instructions<\/li>\n<li>approach to moderation (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li>method for giving\/receiving feedback defined<\/li>\n<li>evaluation \u2013 effectiveness of design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Technology Enhanced Learning offers specialist guidance and consultancy to colleagues at the University of Sussex on how to effectively integrate technology into teaching. \u00a0We can help with the design of individual activities at the modular level or offer input into the development of curricula for new courses. \u00a0For more information on these services or any of the frameworks outlined in this post please contact us by emailing <a href=\"mailto:tel@sussex.ac.uk\">tel@sussex.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>References<\/h3>\n<p>Cochrane, T., Antonczak, l., Keegan, H. and Narayan, V.
