I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t could prove useful\u00a0to\u00a0anyone wanting an alternative to typing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>First, what are Google docs?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google documents are one of a range of free tools offered by Google housed in Google drive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The docs, slides and sheets (word processor doc, presentation slides and spreadsheet) are stored in a Google drive, they are online (cloud-based) and they \u2018sync\u2019 (all catch up with each other). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can access your Google Drive contents from any device and you don\u2019t need to press save &#8211; they constantly update.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can return to earlier versions too. Google docs share many features of <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-US\/article\/Accessibility-features-in-Word-Online-96a970f4-ee66-480d-ad12-52968c42dacb\">Microsoft Office 365<\/a> which is available at Sussex which also has a <a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/windows\/dictate-text-speech-recognition#1TC=windows-7\">voice dictation feature.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Within Google docs you can use the Google Voice Typing tool feature.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To take a look at Google documents, register with Google for free <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/docs\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>A demo of Google Voice typing <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Below is a 30 second video demonstration of Google docs in action. You will hear me talking about how Smart boards work. Click on it and away you go! The microphone will turn red to show that it is activated and ready for you to speak. The only equipment required in addition to your computer\/device, Wi-Fi access and Google document is a headset with microphone. These are easily available online, the cheapest headset we found was a snip at just \u00a32.50. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With your voice you can control the formatting of a document as well as the actual content, thanks to Google\u2019s voice recognition and speech-to-text features. Here are some common, easy (fun, even!) voice commands you can use to control your document:<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3981\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3981\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3981 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/04\/155183682_692fcef546_z-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Google Voice typing tool\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/darwinbell\/155183682\">by Darwin Bell <\/a>shared under a Creative Commons (BY-NC) license<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just say, and it will be so!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New line <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bold<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Insert bullet <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scroll up\/down<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you gain experience in\u00a0using the simpler voice commands, try and use the voice commands to move around your document by using longer commands such as \u2018move to paragraph\u2019 or \u2018apply heading 1\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you have finished with formatting your document, you can download it as a Microsoft Word File and save on to your computer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How could you use this tool in learning?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You could use Google Voice typing for a variety of learning activities! Here are some ideas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dictate an essay or an essay outline<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">summarise lecture notes or revision notes <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">create verbal notes or \u2018to do\u2019 lists after a meeting or workshop<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">practice a language! Google voice can accommodate 45 different languages<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">play a recording through a headset to transcribe it to text<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018thought dump\u2019 &#8211; get all your thoughts out in one go quickly and on the move <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">write\/speak a book or letter<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>The need for free Inclusive tools <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In light of recent Government changes to the Disability Support Allowance (DSA), knowledge of free, accessible <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inclusive tools can be an effective way to support students in learning. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning Technologist, Pete Sparkes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">highlights a number of effective ways to help students in his recent blog post, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2016\/03\/01\/inclusive-digital-teaching-practice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inclusive Digital Teaching Practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we are introducing Google Voice typing, a feature of Google documents which allows you to dictate and format your documents by voice.
