{"id":4336,"date":"2016-07-12T09:30:12","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T08:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/?p=4336"},"modified":"2016-08-02T14:57:40","modified_gmt":"2016-08-02T13:57:40","slug":"making-learning-accessible-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2016\/07\/12\/making-learning-accessible-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Making learning accessible through technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How can we make learning easier for everyone? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We all experience barriers to learning, but for some of us these challenges mean that we require additional support in order to complete everyday tasks pertaining to work or study. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While everyone working in education has a responsibility to promote inclusivity and make learning as accessible as possible, it is also important to recognise that accessibility tools can be used by anyone to increase their productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here at the University of Sussex, we recently invited\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/staff\/alistair-mcnaught\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alistair McNaught<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joint Information Systems Committee (Jisc)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to deliver a workshop on how technology can enable us to increase productivity and overcome barriers to learning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This blog post will attempt to summarise some of the most important tools introduced in this workshop and provide some brief suggestions about how these could be used in academic contexts. \u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><b> Make text more readable<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learners struggle with reading for a variety of reasons, such as dyslexia or visual impairment, but giving students\u00a0the ability to customise the format and appearance of a text allows them to experience it in a way that is more accessible to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.readability.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Readability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, available both as a browser extension and multi-platform app, transforms any webpage into a cleaner format for reading. For mobile devices, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.urbandroid.lux&amp;hl=en_GB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twilight<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">app on Android and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/16\/03\/24\/how-to-use-apples-new-night-shift-mode-in-ios-93\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Night Shift mode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in iOS 9.3 and above serve a function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you just want to magnify the size of the text, then\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portableapps.com\/apps\/accessibility\/virtual_magnifying_glass_portable\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Virtual Magnifying Glass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portableapps.com\/apps\/office\/zoomit-portable\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ZoomIt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are useful applications. This can be very useful when teaching or giving presentations, especially when displaying small text which cannot be resized or enlarging a particular part of an image. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> Increase your reading speed<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spreeder.com\/app.php\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spreeder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> extension <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/spreed-speed-read-the-web\/ipikiaejjblmdopojhpejjmbedhlibno\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spreed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, increase reading speed by displaying text rapidly, one word at a time, in the centre of the screen. This allows you to continue reading while riding your bike or cooking the dinner, but is especially useful for proofreading your writing, because you often hear errors that your eyes would unconsciously correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cross-plus-a.com\/balabolka.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Balabolka<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a fantastic text-to-speech app which has a portable version and allows you to convert any text into an audio file. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you want text-to-speech in your browser,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/chrome-speak\/diagnfimeecdcecjpnkjgbnlelkclcpj\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chrome Speak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/claroread-chrome\/ifgehbglgmidafhhdcopacejknmcmhcd?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Claroread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are both good options. A number of solutions exist for this, including the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/docs\/answer\/4492226?hl=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">voice typing function in Google Docs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuance.co.uk\/dragon\/index.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dragon Naturally Speaking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/voicenote-ii-speech-to-te\/hfknjgplnkgjihghcidajejfmldhibfm?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voicenote II<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
