For example, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/brightonintercambio\/events\/232590112\/?gj=wc1d.2_e&amp;rv=wc1d.2_e&amp;_af=event&amp;_af_eid=232590112&amp;https=off\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brighton Intercambio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is one group that meets every Thursday to practice Spanish and English.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is also an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/International-Friends-in-Brighton-and-Hove\/events\/230491291\/\">International Friends<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Language Exchange and Social<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which offers international students an opportunity to improve their English as well as speaking\u00a0time for those interested in practising a new language. You will also find <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Brighton-Speak-inFrench-naturellement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">French<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Learn-Polish-Brighton\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Polish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Brighton-Japan-Club\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japanese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Wie-sagt-man-Brighton-auf-Deutsch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">German<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/The-Brighton-and-Hove-Italian-Speaking-Meetup-Group\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Italian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Meetups locally. Now you just need to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Change the language from the drop down box from your default\u00a0to the language you want to practice <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Click the mic <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to activate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Start speaking!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See the instant dictation of your speaking and check to see if you are pronouncing your words well enough for Google to translate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;ve\u00a0made a short <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1PFJIf5Lmec\">screencast<\/a> to demonstrate Google Voice using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.screencastify.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Screencastify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In the example you will see that I&#8217;ve changed the default language from English to Spanish (but there are over 50 languages available, from Afrikaans to Zulu).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/1PFJIf5Lmec<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Read the news<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.co.uk\/\">Google Translate<\/a> to help you read the news in another language. Reading current affairs can be a good way to learn. See the Language Surfer&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.languagesurfer.com\/2014\/05\/28\/learn-a-language-with-youtube-30-channels-you-cant-miss\/\">guide to learning channels<\/a>, from French to Farsi. This is a free app and online tool advertised as \u2018the world\u2019s largest lyrics catalogue\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Musix Match provides translated lyrics to songs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can use Musix Match on the web and via the app, which is available on both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/app\/musixmatch-lyrics-finder\/id448278467?mt=8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">iOS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.musixmatch.android.lyrify&amp;hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Android<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to view translations and add to translations as you listen to music. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This could make an interesting language activity for students to curate and translate lyrics for Musix Match users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Musix Match can be used with YouTube and Spotify. (N.B. Flash Sticks are also available for British Sign Language.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Podcasts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seek out the digital radio of another country to help you with your language skills. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You might at first only recognise a few words but by trying to increase the different formats to which you are exposed to a new language will help you to learn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You could use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/overcast.fm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Overcast for iPhone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.bambuna.podcastaddict&amp;hl=en_GB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Podcast &amp; Radio Addict for Android<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, although there are many podcasting apps available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Periscope\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.periscope.tv\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4503 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/Capture-7.png\" alt=\"Language\" width=\"165\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/Capture-7.png 165w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/Capture-7-100x170.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/Capture-7-150x255.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use the live streaming app, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.periscope.tv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Periscope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to find a live Periscope in a country that speaks the language that you are learning. Select a Periscope broadcast via country by selecting the world icon from the top menu. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Periscope is an excellent way to see a language spoken informally and the simple commenting function makes it ideal if your vocabulary is limited.
