You will find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/services\/software\/list?filter=&amp;id=294\">VideoStudio X9<\/a>\u00a0in your Software Centre.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over to you, Daniel.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hear, and I forget; I see, and I know; I do, and I understand\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 ancient Chinese proverb.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the past six months, the course administration team here in the School of Business, Management &amp; Economics (BMEc) has been collaboratively producing a series of \u2018how-to\u2019 guides. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These document how the team carries out the administrative tasks and processes needed for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in BMEc to run as effectively and efficiently as possible.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Screencasts v Screenshots <\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_4641\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/pixelgraphix\/153725264\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4641\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4641 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/153725264_09dcaa99d4_m.jpg\" alt=\"screencastings\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/153725264_09dcaa99d4_m.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/153725264_09dcaa99d4_m-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/153725264_09dcaa99d4_m-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/08\/153725264_09dcaa99d4_m-200x133.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4641\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">flickr photo <a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/pixelgraphix\/153725264\">by Manuela Hoffmann <\/a>shared under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) license<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of our\u00a0processes are quite technical in nature, which often makes it difficult to find the right words to explain how to perform particular actions in concise, uncomplicated terms that are easy for all to follow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One way around this is to illustrate each step with a static screen shot; however, this can lead to guidance documents being padded out by a lengthy series of similar images and a few lines of text that still fall short of demonstrating how a process is carried out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another solution is to record video clips of the actions taken on screen when carrying out a task (known as \u2018screen capture\u2019 or \u2018screencasting\u2019) and including those clips alongside the written instructions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The advantage of using screen capture clips (as opposed to a live demonstration) is that it provides a lasting visual step-by-step demonstration of each process that colleagues can access independently, as and when needed, at a pace that suits them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Screencast options \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Screen capture clips can be recorded in either PowerPoint 2013 or an application called Corel ScreenCap X9, which can be accessed by installing VideoStudio X9 from the Software Center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(To access the Software Center: <strong><em>Start Menu &gt; All Programs &gt; Install Applications, highlight VideoStudio X9 and click Install.<\/em><\/strong><em>)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is a short <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=0B1NIY8ggh5mnOHVkWjFXWkpZUTQ\">screencast<\/a>\u00a0to show you how to download\u00a0Corel ScreenCap X9 from the Software Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>PowerPoint 2013<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creating a screen recording in PowerPoint 2013 is fairly straightforward. (To record the whole screen, you should drag the red dashed box from the top-left corner of the screen to the bottom-right corner of the screen.) To save the clip as a separate file, right-click on it and select Save Media As in the option menu that appears.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>ScreenCap X9<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ScreenCap X9 offers an alternative solution to PowerPoint and one that allows users to record and save screen capture clips as standalone files without having to follow the additional steps needed in PowerPoint to save the clip as a separate file. Users can also choose whether to include audio with the recording and whether mouse clicks that take place in the recording should be animated (blue rings appear around the cursor when the mouse is clicked). To start a recording, you can either click the record button (the red circle) or press F11. Please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=0B1NIY8ggh5mnZ2wwZlNocDBGTDQ\">short video<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As with PowerPoint, a three-second countdown takes place before the recording begins. Recordings can be paused by pressing F11 again or stopped by pressing F10.
