no doubt that students need to develop their use and understanding of digital tools (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/492889\/DCMSDigitalSkillsReportJan2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Skills for the UK Economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t be misled by talk of the \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/digital-native\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital native<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 who by virtue of being born in the internet era has an innate understanding and ability to use technologies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just because students own smartphones and use social media to communicate with their friends doesn\u2019t mean that they can use digital tools professionally, critically evaluate them and make informed decisions about online security, identity and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/design-4-learning.blogspot.co.uk\/2016\/03\/what-is-digital-wellbeing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital wellbeing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are digital skills and why do we need them?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to a recent report from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201617\/cmselect\/cmsctech\/270\/270.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">House of Commons Science and Technology Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital skills have no single definition, but have been variously described to include a general ability to use existing computers and digital devices to access digital services, \u201cdigital authoring skills\u201d such as coding and software engineering, and the ability to critically evaluate media and to make informed choices about content and information\u2014\u201cto navigate knowingly through the negative and positive elements of online activity and make informed choices about the content and services they use\u201d.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Importantly they add that \u2018These skills are no longer sector specific.\u2019 Whatever graduate-level career our students go on to will expect digital literacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can students develop digital capabilities at university?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/492889\/DCMSDigitalSkillsReportJan2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Skills for the UK Economy Report (2016)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is to \u2018Ensure that digital skills are learned pervasively at all stages of education and training.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are not \u2018add-on\u2019 skills, but essential graduate attributes and as such they should be embedded in the curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Developing digital skills as part of a course can be achieved by \u2018doing it digitally\u2019 &#8211; it need not be about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> students are learning but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> they carry out their studies. Whatever students need to do they can probably \u2018do it digitally\u2019 to gain confidence and skills. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What have you got planned for this term? Smartphones for learning<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How can I learn more about \u2018doing it digitally\u2019?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encouraging students to use digital technologies can be challenging if tutors are not themselves confident about using the tools. This autumn the TEL team will be running a number of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/workshops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">staff workshops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to help tutors gain the confidence with digital tools that will enable them to embed digital practice in their modules. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning by creating with smartphones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Introduction to Poll Everywhere<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reaching out to international students through technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working together online<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Augmented reality and virtual reality in the classroom<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engage learners using Twitter, Storify, Periscope and Vine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multimedia enhanced teaching and learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Run your own webinar with Adobe Connect<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/workshops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read more and book online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> via the TEL website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sussex staff wanting to integrate digital skills into their modules can also contact their school <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/ourservice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">learning technologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to discuss ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For students keen to develop their digital skills TEL are running\u00a0workshops during the Autumn term as part of Skills Hub.
