This post looks at some of the tools which can be used to accomplish tasks together online and <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5057 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/10\/Capture-2-300x300.png\" alt=\"capture\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/10\/Capture-2-300x301.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/10\/Capture-2-150x151.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/10\/Capture-2-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/10\/Capture-2-200x201.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2016\/10\/Capture-2.png 405w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>why it is important to introduce students to them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Digital skills <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You may have seen media coverage earlier this year of a \u2018Digital skills crisis\u2019. This followed two reports on digital skills in the UK; the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201617\/cmselect\/cmsctech\/270\/270.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital skills crisis Second Report of Session 2016\u201317<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (House of Commons Science and Technology Committee) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/492889\/DCMSDigitalSkillsReportJan2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Skills for the UK Economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/uk.ecorys.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ECORYS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The former reported that \u2018almost 90% of new jobs require digital skills to some degree, with 72% of employers stating that they are unwilling to interview candidates who do not have basic IT skills\u2019 (page 7) and the latter recommended that in order to address this need we \u2018Ensure that digital skills are learned pervasively at all stages of education and training\u2019 (page 5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are a range of possible models or frameworks for what are variously called digital skills or digital capabilities (for more on this see the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/seckerj\/developing-digitally-literate-staff-and-students-experiences-from-lse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">slides from Jane Secker\u2019s recent TEL seminar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can we develop digital skills?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For many years universities have been using group tasks to help students develop interpersonal and organisational skills that are invaluable for life, irrespective of which career path they choose. Today, the use of digital tools for sharing resources and collaborating online is an important part of that (see \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2016\/09\/06\/digitally-embedding-digital-skills-curriculum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doing it digitally: embedding digital skills in the curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019). One way that universities can embed the development of digital communication and collaboration skills is by encouraging students to use digital tools for writing together, sharing resources and organizing tasks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an earlier post on \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2015\/09\/29\/learning-together-technology-enhanced-collaboration\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning together: Technology enhanced collaboration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 I discussed a few tools that might be useful for this type of activity and more were explored in a recent workshop on \u2018Working together online\u2019 (running again on 14th November &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/direct.sussex.ac.uk\/page.php?page=staff_development_booking_form&amp;trail=staff_development&amp;ac=1606\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">booking for Sussex staff via Sussex Direct<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students can also be encouraged to use digital tools in other areas of their studies and life. Smartphones for learning<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Digital tools for working together online<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Which tools work for you will depend on the nature of the task and personal preference. There are also online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote so there are many possibilities for collaboration. Students could:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use Onenote to collect and share resources for a group project. These could be files, websites, images, audio or video notes, online videos etc. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Write a document together in Word online.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prepare a group presentation with PowerPoint online.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Work on data together with an online Excel spreadsheet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ITS offer guidance on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/help\/faq?faqid=2753\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sharing files with OneDrive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and this <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/onenoteineducation.com\/students\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OneNote for students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> website offers lots of ideas and support. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Postgraduate researchers and staff can also use <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/services\/networkandstorage\/box\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Box<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to share Microsoft Office files and collaborate on them (see <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/help\/faq?faqid=2797\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ITS FAQ 2797<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), but if you are thinking about storing and\/or sharing research or teaching materials please see the Library\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/library\/researchdatamanagement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Research Data Management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> website and the ITS guidance on use of cloud services (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/help\/faq?faqid=2550\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FAQ 2550<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each of these tools have mobile apps so users can work together using smartphones or tablets as well as laptop or desktop computers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Padlet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a free tool which lets you create an online board or \u2018wall\u2019 where multiple users can post text, documents, images, videos, music, and weblinks. Many Sussex staff are now using this tool which can be <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/help\/faq?faqid=2749\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">embedded in Study Direct<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It is a great tool for crowdsourcing ideas, either live in the class or remotely; for gathering many types of resources around a topic and for creating a sense of community in a shared online space. Students could use Padlet as an alternative to a group presentation &#8211; collecting material on a topic and adding their own comments and\/or media objects (videos, sound files, images). Dr Lucy Robinson (History) and Dr Rebecca Webb (Education) wrote about their use of Padlet in this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/2015\/11\/padlet-digital-walls-for-sharing-learning-and-teaching\/#gref\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">post for the #altc blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Trello<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a free collaboration tool for organizing tasks and projects. It lets you create boards, each of which can have multiple lists made of individual cards. You can break a big project into smaller tasks and add people to each card or board so that they can see which parts of the task are their responsibility and keep track of the whole project. Cards can be colour-coded with labels, have checklists added, a due date entered, and files attached. There is space on the \u2018back\u2019 of the card for comments so people working on a task together can keep each other updated.
