Phil Richards (JISC Chief Innovation Officer), emphasised the ongoing need to innovate and highlighted that in response to recent educational and economic changes, JISC\u00a0have altered\u00a0their\u00a0focus to ensure that institutions\u00a0receive value for money.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You can view the full\u00a0<a title=\"Link to presentation\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/uOshrS1tPHo?list=PL449o51ITpvqqZFqrQZoKywh2xLLxyjXD\" target=\"_blank\">presentation<\/a> on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Learning analytics<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-537\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"analytics\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics-100x70.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics-150x106.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics-200x141.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics-450x319.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics-600x425.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/analytics.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Adam Cooper (Co-Director of Cetis), led the \u2018Developing a Learning Analytics strategy for a Higher Education institution\u2019 breakout session to look further into\u00a0learning analytics.<\/p>\n<p>On the positive side good analysis and application were identified as having the potential to increase student retention and improve the student learning experience. \u00a0However alongside these benefits it was acknowledged there was scope for data to\u00a0be\u00a0abused, either through\u00a0misinterpretation or\u00a0misuse to suit a particular agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Reinforcing the need for care, Adam highlighted\u00a0that data misuse can occur for a number\u00a0of reasons; incorrect or incomplete collection, poor presentation, or insufficient support and training in place to enable\u00a0staff to make the data meaningful.<\/p>\n<h3>Academic solution<\/h3>\n<p>A team effort by academics and analysts was a proposed strategy for harnessing the best of learning analytics. Academics have a wealth of\u00a0knowledge of the HE landscape and the student journey &#8211; contextual information that could prove invaluable in terms of understanding and interpreting collected data.<\/p>\n<p>Combining the expert knowledge from both academics and analysts in suitable roles within a learning analytics strategy would\u00a0ensure\u00a0that data is used accurately, fairly and with purpose. There seemed to be a desire for e-books to provide features typically found\u00a0on the web, such as;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>discussion forums<\/li>\n<li>quizzes<\/li>\n<li>analytics<\/li>\n<li>multimedia<\/li>\n<li>offline capability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interest was also evident in the methods of e-book publication, creation and technical standardisation.<\/p>\n<p>This discussion challenged the definition of an e-book. Was\u00a0it was necessary when many of the\u00a0requirements are already possible with a website?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Collaborative authoring and\u00a0e-book remixing<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-559\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"Collaborate\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post-100x64.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post-200x129.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post-450x291.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post-600x388.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/collab-Petes-post.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of particular interest was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcefabric.org\/en\/booktype\/\">BookType<\/a>, a content management system for collaborative authoring of e-books based on the philosophy of &#8216;publish once, read everywhere&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Mick Chesterman (Flossmanuals &amp; Manchester Metropolitan University) presented collaborative authoring tools and the concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/Wilbertgk\/booki-presentation-without-editor\">remixing e-books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A book remix is achieved using a formless content approach which makes it easier to transport text to different formats and devices. Similar to a music DJ, it is based on the concept of mixing from multiple sources to create a new, single output. A\u00a0powerful idea; relevant text can be put into context, combined and edited.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>History of Educational Technology<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackeducation.com\/about\/\">Audrey Watters<\/a>, educational writer, ended the conference with a discussion on the importance of accurately documenting the history of educational technology. Highlighting the point that \u2018history is often written by the victors\u2019, Audrey warned how, due to a lack of innovation and awareness, educators are in danger of repeating mistakes from the past.<\/p>\n<p>You can view <a title=\"Link to presentation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vo2Q06Cczkk&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">Audrey&#8217;s presentation<\/a> on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>So, can\u00a0innovations in technology be used to support and enhance university life?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Yes, but we need to handle innovation skilfully.
