You can pick out one or two ideas to use in your own teaching to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/universitybusiness.co.uk\/Article\/top-tips-on-using-technology-for-student-engagement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">engage your students<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/guides\/using-digital-media-in-new-learning-models\">flipped learning\/blended learning<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk\/news\/uk-job-market-experiencing-digital-skills-shortage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">increase your students\u2019 digital skills<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Below you will find a number of scenarios that you might find yourself in as a teacher. The scenarios each present a dilemma followed by a simple idea for using technology with your students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Teaching and learning scenarios<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Scenario 1. <em>I want to get responses from my students but I don\u2019t really want them to use a mobile app. I don\u2019t want students distracted by their mobile phones.<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Idea.<\/strong> You could try <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plickers.com\">Plickers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are scannable cards that you print (for free!). Once Plicker cards are assigned to students, you can glean feedback from them by <\/span>scanning the Plicker cards with the Plickers app on your phone. Only you need a device in this instance! You can display the results of the feedback you get on a screen using the LiveView and you can also keep and export feedback.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2016\/05\/17\/plickers-easy-use-quizzing-tool\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plickers! An easy-to-use quizzing tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. I don\u2019t want to worry about log-ins and registering accounts and I want it to be private (i.e, not listed on web searches). <\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Idea.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You could use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This is an online \u2018virtual wall\u2019 that allows you to add a text comment, an audio file, a video, an image or upload a document. All your students need to add to the wall is a link, so no fiddly registrations or log-ins are needed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can upload directly to your Padlet wall which means you don\u2019t need to confuse saving documents and then finding them again to upload. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Padlet wall requests access to your mic and camera or recorder which means that you can add your audio, image or video directly to the wall. You can now add comments to items on the wall (activate this option in your settings). Students and tutors at Sussex have loved it and you can now\u00a0embed your <a href=\"https:\/\/studydirect.sussex.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?searchstring=padlet&amp;id=12486&amp;submit=Go\">Padlet wall easily into Study Direct<\/a>. I am a bit confused about copyright and I am not sure how to attribute images. I really don\u2019t have the time.<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Idea. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You could use <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.photosforclass.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Photos for Class<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This is a large database of images that are available under <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\">Creative Commons licences<\/a>. Best of all, when you download the images they download with the attribution already included. Photos for Class is a great resource for the busy teacher. I am not sure where to start. I have a Twitter account but I haven\u2019t used it in years. I don\u2019t really get hashtags #help<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Idea. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You could look at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/10daysoftwitter.wordpress.com\/10dot-schedule\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ten Days of Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> developed by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.gravatar.com\/rattusscholasticus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr Helen Webster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (@scholastic_rat). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This resource has been especially designed for academics to help them to understand Twitter and to tackle it in small bite-size chunks. Day 1 starts at the very beginning with guidance on how to set-up your profile. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each day you will learn a little more until you are Tweeting and using hashtags. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For a helpful\u00a0explanation of how to use Twitter and hashtags at conferences, see the post <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2016\/05\/24\/conference-tweeting-storify\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conference Tweeting and Storify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. What can I use that is easy and free? <\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Idea.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/screencastify-screen-vide\/mmeijimgabbpbgpdklnllpncmdofkcpn?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Screencastify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This is a simple tool for recording videos of your screen that works with the Google Chrome browser. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Screencastify records your screen for up to ten minutes with the option of including a thumbnail video of yourself. If you are camera shy, don\u2019t worry, you can just have the audio narration of you talking through the slides without the webcam. Here is an example of a short screencast to demonstrate using\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2016\/04\/26\/speaking-documents-google-voice-typing\/\">Google Voice Typing tool<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"550\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/90GLxorAIQo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once you are happy with your recording, you can then upload the video clip directly to your Study Direct site for students to watch the PowerPoint slides as you talk through them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is ideal to\u00a0give to students before a session if you want to try flipped learning techniques in your teaching. I am not sure what I can do other than picking students out. There are lots of tools here you can use to randomly select groups, manage classroom layouts, random name generators, classroom countdown and SpeedMatch which allows for quiz and easy quiz matching. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Group Maker is an easy, simple but very effective tool and somehow students seem much happier to move when the class is autogenerated.
