How can video, audio, digital annotation and other forms of multimedia be used in education?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to the overwhelming response we had to our previous blog post <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2016\/11\/22\/5-tips-for-multimedia-enhanced-teaching-and-learning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 Tips for Multimedia Enhanced Teaching and Learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we have put together 5 more tips for using multimedia technology to make your teaching more diverse, engaging and inclusive. In their research on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=jzMGc75jcXEC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PT21&amp;dq=kress+multimodal+learning&amp;ots=U8n-WCAnHH&amp;sig=4fEkrikK_kZDtUbyoxNZT0VDEWc#v=onepage&amp;q=kress%20multimodal%20learning&amp;f=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">multimodality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=YnfZm5z37WMC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PR5&amp;dq=kress+multimodal+learning&amp;ots=2ecT6IxkRv&amp;sig=ibbs7vJW5BPP1FVaURsnl5Pygqk#v=onepage&amp;q=kress%20multimodal%20learning&amp;f=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">multimodal learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iris.ucl.ac.uk\/iris\/browse\/profile?upi=GKRES81\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gunther Kress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and his colleagues argued that presenting information through \u2018one mode alone fails to capture the meaning of a communicative event\u2019 and that, when you combine modes, they interact to create \u2018multimodal ensembles\u2019 which convey \u2018more complex, modulated meanings\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In teaching and learning, these modes &#8211; video, audio, gesture, tactile stimulation &#8211; \u00a0become like colours on a painter\u2019s palette, and the teacher becomes an artist who uses these different colours to shape a unique and memorable experience for their learners.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, what kind of a multimodal learning experience should we \u2018paint\u2019? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are some ideas to get you started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1) Create digital dialogues with collaborative online conversations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_5729\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5729\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5729 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/01\/Capture-4-300x83.png\" alt=\"An image of the Anchor logo multimedia\" width=\"300\" height=\"83\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/01\/Capture-4-300x83.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/01\/Capture-4-100x28.png 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/01\/Capture-4-150x41.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/01\/Capture-4-200x55.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/01\/Capture-4.png 373w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\">Anchor FM: Radio for the people<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Try using a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anchor.FM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to record and publish audio clips of up to 2 minutes, which others can reply to, creating a collaborative, daisy-chain style online conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An example of this can be seen in the threads <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/w\/98a9bb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does political correctness affect the way people express themselves?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/w\/98a765\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spotify vs Vinyl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This could be a great way to generate a discussion that transcends the normal space and time constraints of the classroom, but can also be archived and revisited for revision purposes. Or use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/audioboom.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AudioBoom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to create your own online audio series or podcast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/119702\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr Alison Pike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Psychology) has recently created a vlog in which students ask her questions about specific topics, such as assessment and feedback, and the answers are made available to other students as an online video. We have recently started a Teaching with Tech podcast &#8211; you can listen to the first seven episodes <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/podcast\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3) Record presentations or discussions for students to review and self-evaluate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students often give presentations or participate in seminar discussions, so why not record these and use this them to help \u00a0students to self- or peer- evaluate their presentation skills? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you plan to do this, it is important to consult the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/documents\/guidance-on-the-recording-of-educational-activities-v2.docx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guidance on Recording Educational Activities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and seek consent from students using a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/documents\/example-consent-form-for-audio-visual-recording-of-educational-activities.docx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consent Form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
