Digital media can be a great enabler for inclusive practice but it can also introduce significant challenges, particularly for individuals working within professional contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Exploring these issues and attempting to address some of these challenges is the focus of a free, one day event being hosted at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Sussex<\/a> by the Media Enhanced Learning Special Interest Group (MELSIG) on Tuesday the 9th of September.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What is MELSIG?<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_615\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/MELSIG_logo.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-615\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-615 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/08\/MELSIG_logo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"MELSIG_logo\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Media Enhanced Learning Special Interest Group<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/melsig.shu.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\nMELSIG<\/a>, established in 2008, is an independent community of educational professionals from across the UK. The group, chaired by Andrew Middleton (Head of Innovation &amp; Professional Development, Sheffield Hallam University), seeks to lead innovation in teaching and learning through the sharing of good practice in the use of digital media and the new and emerging pedagogies they support.<\/p>\n<p>MELSIG run events across the UK though most recent events have taken place in the north of England.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Digital media, interaction and inclusivity<\/h3>\n<p>The forthcoming event at Sussex &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/melsig.shu.ac.uk\/?page_id=645\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Digital Media Interaction and Inclusivity<\/em><\/a> &#8211; represents a welcome return to the south for MELSIG and a great opportunity for educational professionals from across the region to engage with a dynamic and enthusiastic special interest group. The last MELSIG event, held at Manchester Metropolitan University in April 2014\u00a0offers a good insight into the diverse interests of the group with topics exploring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>game-based pedagogy<\/li>\n<li>teaching with social media<\/li>\n<li>augmented reality<\/li>\n<li>mobile devices for learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/sonofedd\/melsig-smart-devices-for-learning-3\" target=\"_blank\">Storify<\/a>\u00a0of tweets from the day curated by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sonofedd\" target=\"_blank\">@sonofedd<\/a>\u00a0gives a sense of the energy, collegiality and the extent of the sharing among those who attended.<\/p>\n<p>The Sussex event (#melsigus) promises to be no less exciting, with a range of speakers showcasing innovation from the host institution and the region.
