As there have been some useful updates recently this seems like a good time to have a closer look at Padlet and how it can be used in teaching and learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Padlet?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Padlet provides a free virtual wall where users can post content and comments. Click on the image to see it on Padlet.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>How are people using Padlet?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many staff at the University of Sussex are using Padlet for collaborative work and learning. Two of the first projects using Padlet at the University were outlined in this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/2015\/11\/padlet-digital-walls-for-sharing-learning-and-teaching\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">post on the #altc blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Professor Lucy Robinson (History) and Dr Rebecca Webb (Education) which show how versatile it can be. Where Lucy and her students were <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2015\/05\/05\/diy-digital-innovating-with-tel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">using Padlet to create learning resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Rebecca\u2019s students used it as a social and reflective space. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More recently, Dr Wendy Garnham\u2019s Foundation Year Psychology students have been creating a rich mix of digital artefacts during seminars and sharing them to group Padlet walls for others to comment on. Wendy and some of the students <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/adqe\/documents\/panel-2---from-paddling-to-swimming---a-new-approach-to-flipped-learning-in-seminars.pptx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">presented their use of Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/adqe\/enhancement\/teachinglearningenhancement\/tandlconf2017\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sussex Teaching and Learning Conference 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and you can hear Wendy talk about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/teachingwithtech\/10-transforming-seminars-with-padlet-dr-wendy-garnham\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transforming Seminars with Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/teachingwithtech\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teaching with Tech Podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Padlet can also be great for gathering ideas and comments in meetings or at events. Recently we used Padlet walls as sharing spaces during some of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2017\/05\/31\/take-5-summer-learn-new-skills\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take 5 online courses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, so that participants could share in a more visual way than through a forum. We set the sharing and commenting options so that everyone on the course could post and comment, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studydirect.sussex.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?id=12486&amp;faqid=2749\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">embedded the Padlet wall into the Study Direct (VLE) site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> so that it could be seen and added to without leaving the site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I get started with Padlet?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This short video will introduce Padlet and show you some of the options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/U3P5QySmLeU\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/U3P5QySmLeU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then this short step-by-step guide will take you through the steps to setting up a wall (also available as a PDF\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2017\/07\/Padlet-Guide-July-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Padlet Guide<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.padlet.com\">www.padlet.com<\/a> to sign up for a free account.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2. Click \u2018+ NEW\u2019 or \u2018MAKE A PADLET\u2019 to create a new Padlet wall and choose the layout you prefer (this can be changed later by going to the \u2026 menu). Once your wall is created you will be prompted to \u2018Modify\u2019 the title and description; choose the wallpaper background, allow attribution and commenting (or not) and choose your own URL. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4. Click NEXT to move onto People and Privacy settings. These will determine how visible your wall is. You can also adjust the editing rights of your wall here. The privacy options are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Private \u2013 Only you and the people you add as contributors can access the padlet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Password protected \u2013 Visitors will need to enter a password (of your choosing) in order to access the padlet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Secret \u2013 Anyone who has the link or QR code can access the padlet. It will not be visible in Google search or public areas of Padlet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Public \u2013 Anyone can access the padlet. It will appear in internal search as well as Google, and may be featured by Padlet on community pages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are using Padlet with students you probably want to make it Secret and share the URL with them. For a smaller group you can add individual collaborators via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5. You are now ready to start posting! Double click on any empty space or the big pink + icon. Give your post a title then click on the icons to add audio, video, a web link, photo or document.
