You can also subscribe to podcasts, so that you automatically receive updates whenever a new episode comes out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why are podcasts useful in Higher Education?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Podcasts can be used as a learning resource. Students can be encouraged to search out relevant podcasts and share them with their peers, and\/or create their own. These lists will help you find relevant podcasts for your teaching and\/or learning:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/networks.h-net.org\/node\/84048\/pages\/111820\/academic-podcast-roundup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic Podcast Roundup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Humanities and Social Science topics)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lewismackenzie.science\/blog-1\/2017\/2\/1\/a-big-list-of-science-podcasts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Big list of science podcasts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Sciences)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/podacademy.org\/about-pod-academy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pod Academy<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Researchers can also create podcasts to engage the public with their work. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can I listen to podcasts?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can find, subscribe, and listen to podcasts using a mobile device or computer. If you have a mobile device, then the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=de.danoeh.antennapod\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AntennaPod app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Android) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/app\/podcasts\/id525463029?mt=8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Podcasts app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (iOS) are both free and easy to use. If you have computer, then <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.feedly.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">www.feedly.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/uk\/itunes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">iTunes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are both great ways to subscribe to podcasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How do I make a podcast? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Until recently we recommended Audioboom for getting started with podcasting, but as there is no longer a free version we suggest you try SoundCloud. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/on.soundcloud.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">free SoundCloud account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> allows you to publish up to 3 hours of recordings. If you have more than 3 hours of recordings, the most recent 3 hours will be available to your audience. SoundCloud provide lots of online resources to help you. Or you may want to add an introduction, backing music or other audio effects to make your podcast more interesting and engaging for the listener. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is good to keep in mind that whilst editing is a great skill to have in your toolbox, it&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theaudacitytopodcast.com\/do-you-really-need-to-edit-your-podcasts-what-about-authenticity-tap178\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not always needed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Over-editing a podcast to remove every single mistake and stray \u2018um\u2019 and \u2018err\u2019 can make conversation or speech appear robotic and unnatural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the strengths of a podcast as a format is the way it can capture human conversations in a very naturalistic manner and it would be a shame to lose that.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can I edit my recording?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staff and students at the University of Sussex have easy access to Audacity, a free audio-editing and recording software available for Windows, Mac and Linux Operating Systems. It is installed on Sussex University student PCs and Macs and you can <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/its\/help\/faq?faqid=2464\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">install it from the Software Centre on your university computer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or download it from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.audacityteam.org\/home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">http:\/\/www.audacityteam.org\/home\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for your own computer. This <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/manual.audacityteam.org\/man\/tutorial_editing_an_existing_file.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tutorial from Audacity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will take you through the steps of editing your recording.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can I get people to listen to my podcast?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can share or publicise your podcast in several ways. A link to your podcast can be sent by email or posted to social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn). If you have a website, you can embed your podcast there. If students are finding or creating podcasts they can share them in the Virtual Learning Environment or post them to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2017\/08\/01\/padlet-collaborative-learning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are creating a podcast series don\u2019t forget to encourage people to subscribe to the series. This is usually done through an RSS feed or the \u2018Follow\u2019 option in SoundCloud. Here is a useful guide on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Promote-a-Podcast\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to promote your podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can I develop my podcast?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you start making more recordings and building your podcast, there are a few things it is worth thinking about to improve the quality and make your life easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Format &#8211; What format do you want to use (e.g. monologue, dialogue, interviews, group discussions)? Do you want to record in a free way, do you want to script each episode, or do you want to use a mixture of the two approaches?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Content &#8211; What topics will you cover? In what order will you cover these?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Location &#8211; Do you have a quiet room where you can avoid too much background noise? Do you plan to be recording on the move or in public? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People &#8211; Who will be involved in your podcast? Who could you invite as a guest\/co-host? Is there anyone who can help with the planning \/ preparation \/ recording?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Software &#8211; What software or app will you use to record and edit?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Equipment &#8211; What kind of microphone are you using? Is it worth investing in a lapel mic (we use this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Lavalier-Microphone-Recording-Android-Smartphone\/dp\/B01EFEI7QA\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1499334231&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=dual+lapel+mic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dual lapel mic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which is portable and captures voices clearly)? Do you want to invest in an intermediate quality USB microphone (we use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/d\/Microphones\/Samson-Q2U-Microphone-HP20-Headphones\/B001R747SG\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1499334480&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=samson+q2u\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Samson Q2U<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, because it cuts out background noise very well and also can be used with XLR cables which allow you to connect it to more professional sound recording equipment)? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>The Great Sussex Podblast<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can a group of people who are new to podcasting make an entire podcast series in a single afternoon? Yes! As part of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/library\/about\/projects\/digitaldiscovery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Discovery Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the University of Sussex, we gathered a group of people together to plan, record, edit and publish an 8-episode podcast series in a single day. The first, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/teachingwithtech\/12-creating-an-online-induction-dr-catherine-pope-and-helen-hampson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teaching with Tech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, is a longer-form podcast featuring interviews with academics about how they use technology in their teaching. More recently, we have added the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/teachingwithtech\/tel-us-003-tab-dan-tony-george\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TEL:US Podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> featuring members of the team having a short, fun, informal chat about the ideas and apps which most excite us.
