The idea of being able to move your phone and &#8216;look&#8217; around a photo as if you are standing there is a great way of creating an immersive experience, especially when combined with virtual reality headsets such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vr.google.com\/cardboard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google Cardboard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0photography has become much more popular over the last few years. This is because it is easier than ever to create a 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0image. Apps like<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2015\/09\/03\/google-street-view-app-360-photos\/#3hsgoWsP05qJ\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google Street View<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and many more within the respective app stores allow you to quickly take an image with just your normal phone camera (these are sometimes referred to as photo spheres). The stitching of these images is done by the software and has improved immeasurably over the last few years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those wanting to take it further and take better quality images, there are a range of devices,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=360+camera&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=shop&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjaqvr6l4LYAhVrDcAKHdUQAxcQ_AUICigB&amp;biw=1280&amp;bih=636\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at a range of prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. They also come in a range of configurations. Some have one lens pointing up, others like the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.gopro.com\/EMEA\/virtualreality\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GoPro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are a rig with many lenses (GoPro cameras) pointing out. Images are then stitched using software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The camera we use is a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/uk\/about\/theta\/s.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ricoh Theta S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, it has two fish-eye lens positioned either side of the body to give a full 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0image. It is a well reviewed camera, that is pocketable, relatively cheap and easy to use and \u00a0the images look great straight out of the box. This post looks at the use and functionality of the Theta and how we\u2019re looking to make the most out of it for use in education.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>How it works<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can unbox the Theta S and start taking photos right away. Instead of \u00a0a display, it has a prominent shutter button that falls nicely under the thumb when held normally and a few useful lights that show what mode you are in. You won\u2019t be able to see the images immediately though. For that you\u2019ll need to download the companion app<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/uk\/about\/application\/basic.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Theta S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The app guides you through connecting to the camera, via a WiFi connection. It is simple to set up and once that\u2019s done you get a live preview from the camera and can operate the camera fully by remote, including settings for manual control, shutter priority and noise reduction. Once you are done, you can then transfer images to your smart phone (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/uk\/support\/enviroment\/#RICOH-THETA-S\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">see here for supported devices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and that\u2019s it, you have your images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visit the homepage of the Theta S for more detailed device specs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/uk\/about\/theta\/s.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/theta360.com\/uk\/about\/theta\/s.html<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Companion apps<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ricoh have two apps that work with their Theta ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/uk\/about\/application\/basic.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Theta S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the main companion app which \u00a0is used for shooting and reviewing images and videos. It also gives you access to manual shooting modes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The other app is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/uk\/about\/application\/edit.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Theta+<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which allows you to add filters to images, as well as creating videos that travel around the 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0image. You can then export wherever you want. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sharing <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Videos and regular images can be shared across most platforms. If you want to share the full immersive 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0photo you have a few choices. Facebook supports 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0images, and YouTube supports 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0video. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flickr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also supports 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0photos and from there you can share and use embed codes for blogs and websites. There are also new players and dedicated sites such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/360player.io\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">360player.io<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Example images<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/invisible360\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gallery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> we created for Digital Discovery Week. It may also work for introduction to basic skills in an environment where one may need to know certain processes or methods of working prior to using real equipment, such as lab equipment. You might be able to test yourself on the steps to using a centrifuge safely, without worrying about damaging a real one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Until recently<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.google.com\/expeditions\/#header\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google Expeditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was the primary player, presenting 360\u00b0 images of locations around the world and taking \u2018groups\u2019 on a virtual tour. Now we are seeing more companies are offering similar things. Each with their own unique selling point,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vrdropandshare.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VR Drop and Share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by VR Craftworks in Brighton has an innovative way of guiding your tour party to a certain area of the screen, and it\u2019s free.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nearpod.com\/nearpod-vr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nearpod<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also has a \u2018Field Trip\u2019 option, powered by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.360cities.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">360 Cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Technology Enhanced Learning are exploring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/h5p.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">H5P<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and some of the Pro features in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thinglink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0because 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0images are immersive but still a passive experience. Tools such as Thinglink and H5P can allow interactivity to be added \u00a0to the image. The Premium version of Thinglink lets you add hotspots to images and link to other content, such as web links, videos or other 360\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0images to create a tour. You can also embed web content, i.e. Google Docs or other interactive content like H5P. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">H5P allows you to \u2018create, share and reuse interactive HTML5 content in your browser\u2019 (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/h5p.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">h5p.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). For example you can create quizzes, flashcards, sorting activities, audio response questions, accordion menus, interactive videos, and even images with hotspots. What\u2019s great is that all of this is free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019re at the beginning of our exploration into the world of interactive 360\u00b0 photography so would love to see what anyone else is doing.
