This guest post is by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/profiles\/219143\">Suzanne Tatham,\u00a0Academic Services Manager (Library)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, what is an OER? Here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/about\/program-areas\/education-oer\/\">Creative Commons<\/a> definition:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOpen Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials in any medium that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/about\/program-areas\/education-oer\/\">https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/about\/program-areas\/education-oer\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A quick trawl of Twitter\u2019s #oerweek will give you a flavour of the types of OER activity that are taking place in universities and other interested parties across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>OERs are not new to the University of Sussex. Prof Lucy Robinson worked with the University of Sussex Library and the Mass Observation Archive to launch the Jisc-funded <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/observingthe80s\/\">Observing the 80s<\/a> in 2013, an OER that brought together voices from Mass Observation and the British Library Oral History Collections.<\/p>\n<p>In this short video, Tim Seal of the OER SCORE Project discusses the benefits of Open Educational practice. He gives advice on how to license, create, publish, remix and redistribute Open Education.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"550\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wnEB7Ytu4qI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p>A lingering concern around OERs is highlighted with the recent attention given to them by commercial publishers who have introduced open resources alongside proprietary material.\u00a0 Inside Higher Ed have written an enlightening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/digital-learning\/article\/2018\/03\/05\/advocates-develop-framework-stewardship-open-educational#.Wp_oB80d3RV.link\">Guide to Good OER Stewardship<\/a>, advocating the <a href=\"https:\/\/careframework.org\/2018\/03\/04\/toward-a-sustainable-oer-ecosystem-the-care-framework\/\">CARE Framework<\/a> to encourage the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8216;Contribute&#8217; via financial or in-kind contributions to &#8216;advance the awareness, improvement, and distribution of OER.&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Attribute&#8217; by making sure that those who create or remix OER are &#8216;properly and clearly credited&#8217; for their contributions.<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Release&#8217; by ensuring that OER can be shared and used outside the platform in which it is was created or delivered.<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Empower&#8217; by striving to make OER meet the needs of all learners, and supporting the participation of diverse voices in OER creation and adoption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That said, within this OER landscape, open textbooks have been gaining popularity. Open textbooks are written by academics and shared using open copyright licences such as Creative Commons. These licences allow authors to share their textbooks. They also grant permission for anyone to access and reuse the textbook. They reduce the \u201chidden costs\u201d of university study by replacing expensive textbooks with free ones. For the tutor, they present opportunities to adapt the content to suit their particular teaching needs.
