Initially funded by the HEA and formerly known as \u2018Podcasts for Pedagogy\u2019, the group\u00a0is now self-organising and self-financing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_781\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/s200_andrew.middleton.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-781\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-781 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/s200_andrew.middleton-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"s200_andrew.middleton\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/s200_andrew.middleton-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/s200_andrew.middleton-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/s200_andrew.middleton.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew Middleton, Chair of MELSIG<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Speakers from the University of Sussex shared examples of innovation from the host institution while external colleagues from across HE, FE and industry presented a range of practical approaches and unique teaching techniques, from face-mapping to app swaps to location-aware games &#8211; all united by a common aim to work towards making education, and the world itself, more accessible via a considered, compassionate and, most importantly, inclusive use of technology.<\/p>\n<p>Innovative ideas presented on the day include;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>using social media to reduce researcher loneliness<\/li>\n<li>developing apps to assess venue accessibility<\/li>\n<li>gaming to engage students with wildlife and reading<\/li>\n<li>using audio feedback as a tutor to cope with dyslexia<\/li>\n<li>lecture capture for enabling students to revisit concepts<\/li>\n<li>accessibility design methods used by the BBC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Innovation among US<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>From boundary transgressions to live twitter sessions<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dr Denise Turner (Social Work and Social Care) discussed how social media, especially Twitter, can be used to reduce isolation in researchers. Drawing from her own experience \u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-768 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"Denise's quote from Kranzberg\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg-100x59.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg-200x119.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg-450x267.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg-600x357.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2014\/09\/Denises-quote-from-Kranzberg.jpg 736w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>involvement \u00a0in setting up a Twitter-based live chat called #ESWphd (Education and Social Work Phd <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.about.com\/od\/twitterfaqs\/f\/TwitterFAQTweetChat.htm\">Twitter chat<\/a>)<b>, <\/b>which led to motivation and support in the form of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/workshops\/10dottel\/day7\">hashtag <\/a>#TeamTurner.<\/p>\n<p>Denise referred to one of Kranzberg\u2019s six laws of technology &#8211; one that is useful to keep in mind when thinking about technology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Designing Location-aware Nature Games: Widening Participation in Informatics and Product Design<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To maintain children\u2019s interest in the natural environment, Dr Kate Howland (Informatics) and Catherine Grundy (Engineering and Design) created location-aware nature games. Young children readily engage with wildlife activities, but can commonly lose interest by the time they reach the age of 8. The gamification of wildlife can prevent children from disengaging.<\/p>\n<p>Kate and Catherine impressed the audience with their use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.morfoapp.com\/%20\">Morfo <\/a>&#8211; a 3D facebooth that can turn a face into a talking tree or animal, as well as location-aware games which made an interactive game of the campus map of Sussex.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Comfy Birds: Orchestrating reflection through individual, paired and whole class work<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No angry birds, just comfy ones. Dr Nicola Yuill (Psychology) demonstrated a game which she and her team have developed to help children reading through small group game play. Grant created <a title=\"Link to Access Earth\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessearth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Access Earth<\/a> after booking a hotel online, advertised as \u2018accessible\u2019 in order to stay in London for the Para Olympics. Upon arrival, it was clear that the hotel was not at all as advertised. Barriers to access included;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a number of steps that led to the main hotel entrance<\/li>\n<li>a hotel room with insufficient space to manoeuvre a wheelchair<\/li>\n<li>a lift which was only accessible after climbing a number of steps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In response, the team of programmers created Access Earth and used their coding skills to create an app which would allow people to rate venues for accessibility. With plans for the app to be in place in time for 2016, Access Earth hope that people with access needs will be able to confidently plan journeys and accommodation for the next Para Olympics. Fiona put apps unders the spotlight asking, does your favourite app allow you to change the settings of backgrounds to make it easier for you to read? Fiona Macneil created <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.brighton.ac.uk\/elearning\/the-team\/case-studies\/diy-build-your-own-app-swap-breakfasts\/\">App Swap Breakfasts<\/a> to help colleagues and students explore \u00a0mobile applications in relation to teaching and learning. Fiona urges colleagues at other institutions to create their own App Swap Breakfasts using her App Swap Breakfast plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>12 Apps of Christmas &#8211; <\/b>Chris Rowell of Regent\u2019s University discussed how he successfully engages academics with technology. A activities were based around \u2018ShOOC\u2019s\u2019 &#8211; Short Online Open Courses, including Blogging 4 beginners, 5 Days of LinkedIn, and The 12 Apps of Christmas.
