This post offers some ideas for making the most of Twitter at your next conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Building a conference community with a hashtag # <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are organising a conference, make sure you have a good hashtag and share it widely. Here are some things to think about when choosing a hashtag:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Search Twitter to see that your preferred hashtag is not already in use.<\/li><li>Keep it short and simple &#8211; for example, we used #SussexDDW for Digital Discovery Week.<\/li><li>If yours is an annual event think about adding the year to the hashtag &#8211; such as the British Educational Research Association\u2019s #BERA19.<\/li><li>Use \u2018CamelCase\u2019 to capitalise words in your hashtag to make it accessible &#8211; like this #EachWordCaps<\/li><li> Add the hashtag to the conference programme and any promotional materials. <\/li><li>Tweet early and often, from the call for papers through to registration and the programme. This will raise awareness of the hashtag and encourage its use.<\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are attending a conference, check out the hashtag in advance so you can join in the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Live-Tweeting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day there are likely to be some people \u2018live-tweeting\u2019, that is, reporting on the conference as it happens by tweeting. You might want to join in, so here is the etiquette around conference tweeting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Ask permission \u2013 unless organisers or presenters have explicitly said it is okay to tweet about what is being presented. <\/li><li>Only tweet photos of people if you have explicit permission from them. <\/li><li>Always attribute quotes \u2013 preferably using the speaker\u2019s Twitter name (handle).<\/li><li>Always include the conference hashtag.<\/li><li>Remember tweets are completely public \u2013 so be polite and professional.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Live tweeting from a conference can be an engrossing activity and you may be wondering how to find time to tweet whilst listening and making notes. I use Twitter as my note-making system at conferences. I tweet the key messages I want to take away and if others make good points or ask interesting questions I want to think about later I \u2018like\u2019 or retweet them. Delegates can compare notes about parallel sessions, continue discussions and develop the conversation by linking to related resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you cannot be at the event, following a conference hashtag is a great way of participating remotely. It is also good to bring other voices into conference conversations (see \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/2015\/09\/18\/being-there-or-not-conferencing-virtually-and-in-real-life\/\">Being there \u2013 or not?<\/a>\u2019). As this visualization of the tweets using a particular conference hashtag shows, there can be varying degrees of interaction. This conference had 150 delegates attending, but the visualisation shows nearly 3 times that many nodes \u2013 each representing a unique user using the hashtag on the day of the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/3A0GoxU_SV0h_3APGxJfqWEFynIBhKy7m8trdLaYZC1PR8nluadkgErVCJowLubB4Rj8VhLYXlEd2_pazixatXD9BFITX-CeYAB-0EWloazfjf575a5VIOISzZyK2L9rerTQcGms\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption> <br>Visualization of the tweets at the #OpenBadgesHE conference in March 2016 via<a href=\"https:\/\/hawksey.info\/tagsexplorer\/?key=1RZHN_9vPXUu8HNxE3MqyadM3Q6hGVarFXP6ZSwYBUhA&amp;gid=400689247&amp;mentions=true\"> Martin Hawksey\u2019s tagsexplorer\ufeff<\/a> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are speaking at a conference, you might want to consider sharing your slides on Twitter at the start of your session to engage this wider audience. Free tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/hootsuite.com\/en-gb\/\">Hootsuite<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/buffer.com\/\">Buffer<\/a> will let you schedule your tweets in advance. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Curating and sharing conference tweets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After the event you may want to gather tweets (yours and other people\u2019s) together and present them in a more structured way. If you have been using Twitter as your note-making tool then this will be particularly important. It can also be a great way to build a resource that can be saved and shared.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter has its Moments tool which allows you to do this (only available on twitter.com, not mobile apps).
