The two different ways CoPilot will show that you are using your protected Sussex account<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As an organisation that uses Microsoft Office, we have institutional access to CoPilot, which is Microsoft\u2019s \u201cAI companion\u201d or \u201cdigital assistant\u201d, depending on which part of their website you\u2019re reading. You can read more about this in the news announcement from the Better Sussex team on <a href=\"https:\/\/staff.sussex.ac.uk\/news\/article\/64786-unlock-the-power-of-ai-with-microsoft-copilot\">their news article<\/a>. Currently, we have the version which offers \u201cchat\u201d and composition options; there is a more advanced option which can engage with other Microsoft apps such as PowerPoint which we don\u2019t have yet due to cost and other concerns.\u00a0When you use CoPilot, please make sure you are logged in using your Sussex account (e.g. abc123@sussex&#8230;) to ensure you are working within the protections offered by our licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Adobe Firefly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"174\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-4.jpg\" alt=\"The Adobe Firefly logo\" class=\"wp-image-9984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-4.jpg 174w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-4-100x97.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-4-150x146.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>The Adobe Firefly logo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We have had a licence with Adobe for many years and are pleased that they are including Firefly, which is an image generating platform, in their provision.\u00a0Adobe Firefly can create images from text prompts and interact with images the user uploads.\u00a0You can add specific details in your prompt, e.g. specifying a cartoon style, and there is also a menu of variables you can select from including tone, lighting and \u201ccamera\u201d angle.\u00a0As with most AI tools, please be aware of the biases Firefly has; for example the image at the top of this blog is supposed to be of \u201can academic\u201d and I\u2019m sure you all know many academics who look nothing like the output!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Support and Guidance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CoPilot and Firefly are supported by the ITS team.\u00a0 <strong>If you are using them for teaching<\/strong> and would like some guidance, please contact your school\u2019s learning technologist or the EE team.\u00a0 Colleagues from Educational Enhancement have already started sharing tips and quick guides on the preferred platforms and there will be a self-study Canvas course available in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Piloted Products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of (many) great things about being a learning technologist at Sussex is the opportunity to take part in pilots for tools and software.\u00a0There are some pilots in progress at the moment and I\u2019m going to write about the one I was fortunate to lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Jamworks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-5.jpg\" alt=\"The Jamworks logo\" class=\"wp-image-9985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-5.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-5-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>The Jamworks logo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In January we successfully applied to be part of a pilot run by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\">Jisc<\/a> to test the notetaking tool Jamworks.\u00a0Jamworks integrates with Panopto to create transcripts and uses AI to generate highlights and quizzes which are sourced entirely from recorded lecture content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had two cohorts of students, and their lecturers, take part in the pilot and one more group will run during vacation teaching.\u00a0Responses from the academics were largely positive and we were all impressed by Jamworks\u2019 scope as an assistive tool for students with diverse requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observations we made included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It was easy to set Jamworks up and integrate it with Panopto; it was particularly useful that students could access past recordings and not just ones that were made after we had started trialling the tool.<\/li><li>The accuracy of the notes was impressive, including subject-specific terminology which other lecture capture transcripts can occasionally make errors with.<\/li><li>The highlights were useful but in some cases Jamworks could have been a lot more discerning as they could be quite long.<\/li><li>The options for students to adjust their settings, including using a focused reading pane, was great to see and a definite win for accessibility.<\/li><li>We missed having the option to run reports on student usage and engagement, but we recognise Jamworks is fundamentally a learning support tool and not a teaching or monitoring tool.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When I reviewed my notes on Jamworks in anticipation of creating my evaluation, I watched a recording of an early meeting when it was demonstrated to the different university teams taking part in the pilot.\u00a0I have taken a screenshot of my face at one point, which I think illustrates that I was seeing something I liked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6.jpg\" alt=\"Helen Morley looking very impressed, with raised eyebrows and a grin.\" class=\"wp-image-9986\" width=\"260\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6.jpg 346w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6-100x113.jpg 100w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6-150x170.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6-200x227.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/tel\/files\/2024\/06\/2024-06-06-Blog-Pic-6-300x340.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Me, looking like I\u2019ve just been shown something in Jamworks I was impressed with.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Next Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is our ongoing commitment to support the adoption of appropriate and exciting technologies to enhance education at Sussex.
