Richard Hell

Daniel Kane (Lecturer in both English and American Studies) has sent details of an event to be held at the Jubilee Lecture Theatre on Tuesday 4th February (6-8 p.m.):

“Punk music progenitor and writer Richard Hell visits Sussex to give an autobiographical reading from his works (Q & A will follow). In 1973 high school dropout Hell started the band The Neon Boys with his best friend Tom Verlaine. This group evolved into the band Television, which Hell departed before recording. Richard then immediately formed with Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan the rabble-rousing Heartbreakers. Once again he quit that band before recording anything for release, this time in order to found Richard Hell & the Voidoids. The Voidoids’ debut album ‘Blank Generation’ (1977) was hailed by Lester Bangs as “some of the most fitfully dangerous rock & roll I’ve heard this decade,” and immediately became a classic. Hell’s acclaimed books written since his 1984 retirement from music include the novels ‘Go Now’ (1996) and ‘Godlike’ (2006), the compilation of essays, poetry, notebooks and art, ‘Hot and Cold’, and his new autobiography, ‘I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp’ (2013).”
